Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Kecek, did you install the Boot Camp drivers from Apple first? Then the Power Plan Assistant utility with "the useful features for Boot Camp" post-install option enabled? Is keyboard backlight control through Power Plan Assistant working? If it does, try to simply reinstall the Trackpad++.

    This was discussed (and solved!) earlier in this thread, actually.

    So, (again) a fix:

    http://www.powerplan7.com/Windows 7 x64 SP1 Unsigned Drivers Fix.zip

    Usage: unzip, copy BOTH OF THE FILES (the fix executable and its manifest) to C:\Program Files\PowerPlanAssistant, then run the fix from this folder (C:\Program Files\PowerPlanAssistant). Of course, the Power Plan Assistant shall be installed first. After you apply the fix, simply reinstall the Trackpad++.

    Other people - do not use this fix, it's not required normally. It's only SOMETIMES required after SP1 Windows 7 update installation.

    @mwdelta: There are actually four types of right-click on a Mac, three of which work under Windows:

    (Mac OS and Windows) 1. Control + click (oldest method of right-click that originated on the first Macintosh)

    (Mac OS and Windows) 2. Two finger tap (second oldest method of right-click that originated on the first non-unibody MacBook)

    (Mac OS only)              3. Two finger click (third oldest method of right-click that originated on the first unibody MacBook)

    (Mac OS and Windows) 4. Lower right region click (implemented at the same time as above method)

    Regardless of which method is older, use whatever is most comfortable for you. Writing a driver support for two-finger click recognization under Windows requires access to Apple's copyrighted, and highly confidential source data for their trackpad drivers, which I am sure no one has and no one will in the medium term, as there would have otherwise been many alternative drivers for the Mac trackpad under Windows by now. Hope that helps.

    Hi Vlad, thank you so much for your work on these gestures, it makes Windows so much better than before! I will add my vote for the Magic Trackpad development

    Unfortunately, I am having trouble getting the 3 and 4 finger gestures to work, nothing happens when do any 3/4 finger gestures, and 3 finger tap doesn't work either. Everything else is working, such as the pointer speed, scrolling speed, secondary click + tap, etc., so it's definitely using your driver. It's also running the CPU usage to 50%. Here's my current config:

    - MBA late 2010

    - Win 7 32-bit

    - Boot Camp 3.2

    - Trackpad++ 2.2b-x86

    - all 3 + 4 finger gestures enabled

    When I first installed Trackpad++, it didn't work properly, Trackpad++ was running the CPU at 50% and I got a message saying the control module couldn't communicate with the driver. I am in the current state after re-installing Trackpad++. Looking through the entire thread, I didn't see this problem, so I'm not sure if it can be reproduced, but do you have any idea as to what is going on and how I can fix it? Thanks in advance!

    Thanks so much Vladimir. Your programs have worked wonders. You've even solved a problem (unsigned driver error) before I could ask the question! Wonderful work. This is my first post here, but I just wanted to thank you!

    I had a question, and was wondering if you might be able to offer a solution to my problem.

    When playing a game, for example, World of Warcraft, and using the trackpad, to control the characters direction, you must hold right-click and move on the trackpad.

    However, in the game I am unable to control my characters direction. Upon holding the right click, and attempting to spin, the character holds still, while the camera moves.

    Hope I made the problem clear, it's a little difficult to explain. Many thanks again, even if this isn't solved!

    To jeffreychow: Very strange behavior indeed!I What I would recommend is to re-install for the second time. After the reboot you should have the gestures working. I see no reason why they shouldn't work. I'm so sure, because a lot of people use the same hardware and driver combination successfully. Please let us know if the second re-install helped.

    To freshlyputsir: this is because of the Boot Camp part of the trackpad driver. This can be fixed by Apple, and then we can use it (otherwise, in order to fix the right-button dragging it may be needed to replace yet another part of the Apple HID driver stack, which could take many months - just for this single feature... and no guarantee of success, unfortunately).

    Thank You for all the good words, I'm very glad to hear that people really like the multitouch gestures and other improvements of the Trackpad++. Better Windows trackpad driver for Macbook Pro and Air has always been my own dream, either... And, I agree, it's so good it came true

    Hello,

    Could I get some help. I could not get the perfect two finger trackpad scrolling sensitivity in OSX on bootcamp so I tried installing this. I am not sure if I did something wrong. I installed the power plan thing, then the trackpad software. After restarting, for example in Chrome on any random website when i use the trackpad to scroll it still is very jerky. How do I configure this so I can get ultra smooth ultra responsive scrolling like I get in osx?

    I don't get it.

    After each reboot, why am I greeted with a warning that says don't use TAP-DRAG? Why make it an option if I shouldn't use it?

    So... how do I use TAP-DRAG without the nag screen? (Arm in a sling... can't use 2 hands)

    I just downloaded it, it works well, great app, definitely better than the regular one but I have a couple of issues, first when I click on traclkpad++ settings they do not open up so that I can adjust anything.

    The second problem is that my thumb is used to rest on the lowest part of the trackpad where the click is at all times in OSX, ready to get in use and also because the trackpad is taking most of the space on my 2010 Unibody and there isn't much space for it to hang out but here this doesn't seem to be possible, it affects everything, all gestures/taps etc. Is that the way it is and I will just have to learn to use my hand differently in Windows or can it be changed?

    Support Magic Trackpad on "pure" Windows 7.

    Definitely the magic trackpad + trackpad++ + Windows 7 is a prefect match.

    Short answers to the recent questions:

    - Tap-drag is not recommended to use, so the message simply warns you about the quality of this feature; I agree, it could be better to remove the message.

    - For perfect scrolling in the web, I recommend to use Opera browser - very smooth.

    - Definitely the trackpad settings shall always open by double-clicking the Trackpad++ icon in the Windows tray; no one has ever reported anything like this.

    - Ignore accidental input feature should work very well, but you need to enable it first.

    Vlad,

    Great driver, the gestures are quite useful on my MBA 2011.  But I must say its biggest drawback is that tap-to-click is far too sensitive.  Even the slightest graze of the trackpad triggers a click.  The sensitivity needs to be pared down and/or made user-adjustable.
