Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Youre welcome.

    I also encountered another "issue". - When you scroll with two fingers, you are able to move the mouse with the stationary finger, while scrolling. This aint how its done in OS X.

    This issue, and the issue I mentioned earlier, creates some missclicks. - So another suggestion is to make the cursor not movable while scrolling.

    Amazing Work, I like scrolling acceleration and 4 fingure show/hide desktop =D

    Responding to Daniel_Faour'spost, trackpad++ works on same 1st gen 2008 unibody macbook W7 ult 64bit, but I guess it is still at risk of it not working in the future since it's unsupported by the developer.

    But for now,  in order for trackpad++ to work I guess you'll need

    1) Update EFI firmware

    2) Proper BootCamp 3.1 CD (dl from TPB) and download 3.2+3.3 upgrades of Apple

    3) Install BC 3.1 by accessing directly the BootCamp64.msi (have its compatibility set to a previous version of windows)

    4) upgrade to 3.2 and 3.3

    5) install PPA before trackpad++ (Trackpad++ didn't install the first round since I didn't install power plan assistant, worked the second round after PPA is installed (IDK why))

    I had W7 64x installed today from scratch(new SSD and 8gig RAM upgrade, had to upgrade EFI firmware in order to get the RAM recognized). Once you have bootcamp installed, you can enable tap and secondary tap via bootcamp, 2 finger horontial scrolling works in Chrome and Safari.  2 finger vertical scrolling works everywhere else.

    ----------------------------------------------------

    After a couple hours playing with trackpad++, here's some obvervations:

    So currenly 3 fingers gesture works fine horizontally for forward/back works in Chrome, Safari, IE

    3 fingers vertical gesture works in Chrome(Jumpy), IE(Jumpy), doesn't work in Safari

    The coding for 3 fingers doesn't seem to be as responsive as the 2 fingure gestures, you had to let go of 3 fingers for the action to perform and it only go 1 zoom level up or down, not very smooth. Doesn't work in MS office products.  I think the "prevent misclicks" is sort of placing an constraint on smooth gestures, scrolling acceleration for example, IDK the science behind the required physical speed of scrolling gesture for it go faster or slower, but right now it's not very intuitive that's for sure.

    Here's something I don't get, two finger HORIZONTAL scrolling works in Chrome and Safari(with or without trackpad++), but not in IE  or MS office products or any other native Windows apps. So...only if there's some portal to hook up trackpad with a multi-touch version Scrybe w/ custom gestures and custom actions, it'll be awesome and I'll buy it for $99 bucks...

    Yes, please note that original (2008) unibody Macbook Pro has slightly different hardware protocol for trackpad, so some of the features may not work... this is why it's not supported officially. To restate, the only supported models are:

    Macbook Pro: Early 2009,  Mid 2009,  Mid 2010,  Early 2011,  Late 2011

    Macbook Air: Late 2008,  Mid 2009,  Late 2010,  Mid 2011

    Not yet. But by the date of release of the Windows 8, Trackpad++ will very hopefully work with it.

    Does anyone use the Magic Trackpad with Trackpad++? I know it isn't supported, but for the most part it works fine. The only issue I have is that Trackpad++ turns on dragging for the Magic Trackpad (NOT the computer's trackpad), and nothing I do seems to help. I'm okay with not having multitouch capability with the Magic Trackpad for now, but the click-and-drag thing is very irritating. Has anyone had success turning it off?

    Hi, Vladimir,

    I have a Windows 8 Consumer Preview x64 and Macbook Air Late 11, getting a 'Cannot comunicate with Trackpad++ driver!' message. Power Plan Assistant has been installed with no issues and 'Turn Off Keyboard Backlight' works perfectly well. Is there any change to get the Trackpad++ itself work?

    Thanks so much in advance.

    / best regards, ap3rus

    Great Great Great Great Greeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaat !!!

    You made my day!

    I will be testing a few days, but my donation is pretty much set

    Thanks!

    If I you ask me, I would prioritise the magic trackpad support & improved fluidity (e.g. while zooming) over Win 8 for your next steps.

    Hey V-l-a-d-i-m-i-r, good job man. Your drivers have been a important factor in my decision to buy a Macbook Pro as soon as the new models are released.

    Just as a sugestion for the next versions... have you seen this product for Macs http://www.jitouch.com/index.php?page=trackpad, some of those movements would make some nice features for your driver.

    The swipe gestures for Windows 8 would be a great achievement too. There are some videos of Synaptics trackpads in Win8 notebooks that use multi-touch gestures as if the trackpad were a touchscreen, swiping from the sides, etc; those definitly increase the usability of Win8.

    Best Regards

    Hi Vladimir,

    I love this software you created.  Well, I did love it for about one week.  Then it stopped working, so I think I misunderstood how I am supposed to update the software weekly.  I uninstalled, then reinstalled.  To make matters worse I installed Win7 SP1 in between.  Then after reinstalling PPA and TP++ I get the unsigned driver error.  I referred to your comments copy/pasted below, but the link leads to nowhere.  Do you have a better link?

    Thanks!

    Hello Everybody,

    Here is a watermark-free, "one-click" re-enabler of the Trackpad++ driver, targeted to fix the Windows 7 x64 SP1 issue:

    http://www.powerplan7.com/Windows 7 x64 SP1 Unsigned Drivers Fix.zip

    Usage: unzip, copy BOTH OF THE FILES (the fix executable and its manifest) to C:\Program Files\PowerPlanAssistant, then run the fix from PPA folder (C:\Program Files\PowerPlanAssistant). After restart, unsigned drivers will be allowed again. No watermark, no issues. Everything as it was before SP1.

    I think there is a defect in some web browsers, in the way they handle the link which contains spaces. If you copy and paste entire line into the address field, the link works. But, anyways, you do not need it now, and all the rest of the users normally do not need it, either. As it's only for those who installed SP1 after Trackpad++ on 64-bit Windows 7...

    About WIndows 8: to restate, hopefully this OS will be supported by the time it's out.

    Hi  Vladimir,

    Your trackpad++ is awesome!

    But I've noticed some bugs:

    1. No direction inverse for horizontal scrolling. After Lion, it is too hard in windows to use "natural" scrolling for vertical direction and "classic" for horizontal. Quite annoying, especially in graphics editors.

    2. It doesn't remember setting ("Gestures"checkbox) when I want to turn off ALL gesture recognizers.

    Thank you!

    Dear Vlad,

    Sorry for asking this but I absolutly have to, I saw in earlier posts (Yes, I just read the whole thread...) that the issue of viruses, malware, troians, rootkits or any other kind of spyware integrated into Trackpad++ or PowerPlan Helper, was disscussed with you, but to the best of my understanding, you gave a non direct answer about the subject. Also I noticed, after trying to run PowerPlan Helper install sandboxed, that somehow you have implimented a way to pass the sandboxing application, so since you are the only developer (are you?), I would like to know if there is any spyware of any kind integrated into one of them?

    Now despite my question and me not installing it yet I wish to thank you for what I understand is a great piece of software, it is very time consuming to develop such an app so thanX.

    DK
