Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    The good news: "Hardware not supported" issue with Retina Macbook Pro has been fixed. The fix is included in today's build. Please download at TechSpot, as usual. AND, PLEASE, USE ONLY WITH WINDOWS 7 AT THIS MOMENT. NO WINDOWS 8 SUPPORT YET. I WILL POST A MESSAGE HERE WHEN IT IS SUPPORTED.

    As for the Boot Camp-native problems, please contact Apple

    A Chrome extension is out which enable Bootcampers to swipe back/forth for pages. You can get it here:

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mgegfjnccpnkdppohmfgnjalkediapkc

    Or search for it yourself:

    Swipe Gesture

    In google addon store.

    All credits goes to antimatter15.com for creating this. It's still at an early stage, but very useful indeed. And as seeing that swiping back/forth is one of the most used multi touch features (at least to my experience) this addon is a godsend. Also has no problem with people running virtual machines, as the addon can simply be turned off.

    I'm not the master of programming, not even the technical person, but I'm pretty much sure this add-on thing is simply redirecting the scrolling commands somehow, it isn't a true multi-touch, isn't a driver. For instance I use Opera, and I want swipe gesture in my image viewer. Trackpad++ gives me that swiping in all apps (everywhere where back forward keys on my external keyboard are working) But thank anyways, I guess this add-on could be useful for some users under certain scenarios. But I tell you people, try Trackpad++, it's **** good. I'm the fan, officially. I don't care what others say, the Trackpad++ works beautifully for me. Cheers, Paul.

    Right, those are actually two very different approaches. The ultimate goal of the Trackpad++ project is to have the same quality and trackpad feature set in Boot Camp as in the OS X. No Chrome add-on (which in fact simply captures the horizontal scrolling messages and thus works with any touchpad) can solve this.

    Just to remind, here is what the current version of the Trackpad++ offers to Windows 7 Macbook Pro/Air users:

    - Three-finger tap emulates middle mouse button (e.g. you may use it to open browser tabs in background with a single tap or for navigation);

    - Three-finger swiping (horizontal: back/forward, vertical: discrete zoom in/out);

    - Four-finger swiping (vertical: hide/preview all the windows, horizontal: alt-tab alternative);

    - A vital option to ignore accidental input when typing;

    - Accelerated vertical and horizontal scrolling with two fingers (speed and direction customizable);

    - Dragging with two fingers (works perfectly: press with one finger and then freely move second finger or both fingers);

    - Dragging with a single finger ("tap-style") - NOTICE - this method, unlike the previous one does not work perfectly yet (it's quality is 100% identical to Boot Camp-native behavior, because, well, it's directly inherited from the Boot Camp driver);

    - Optional dragging helper: "2x pointer speed while dragging" - not seen even in OS X, the option to increase the pointer speed while dragging; works nice with two-finger dragging!

    - Revised pointer ballistics (i.e. how a pointer speed depends on a finger speed; six optimal presets built-in);

    - Left-lick: either with a press or single-finger tap;

    - Right-click: either with two-finger tap or right-bottom corner press.

    Please exit the Trackpad++ Control Module from the tray and try to reinstall the Trackpad++. If this does not help, you sadly have the revision where the trackpad firmware physically does not enable multitouch in Windows. This is the very specific thing which never happens to newer Macbooks (newer = trackpad without the buttons). Macbook Air got rid of the buttons in 2010, Macbook Pro in 2009. But this could be an issue with your first-gen trackpad which has the buttons. However, this does not happen to all of the old trackpads. This is why they are declared as compatible.

    I have used trackpad++ a few times on the rare occasion that I booted into Win 7 on my MBP. Great product, and I thank you. So I finally buy a copy of Win7 64-bit a couple days ago, and one of the first things I want installed is trackpad. I had seen the disclaimer about needing Power Plan Assistant for 64bit, which I have no problem doing so(we're getting 2 great products for free,...very generous). I go to install PPA and it wants to install AVG toolbar. No problem, I'll just uncheck the install box because I don't need bloatware/toolbars/extra crap...wait..no option to not install AVG toolbar? let me look again,... ***? ...I'll just not check any, and hit Next...ummm, nope.

    Why isn't PPA installable without the AVG Toolbar? I understand sponsors, $, time invested,etc... But I've never not been able to opt out of installing extra stuff(unless it was unlawfully hidden in the install). Am I missing an option on the screen?

    Sorry, just frustrated,....thank you for making such a great tool

    edit: I think I got it without installing any extras? hit custom but don't select anything... my apologies for the above rant.

    Yes, the Power Plan Assistant tool (which is in fact not mandatory to install on the 32-bit OS) shows a small ad during the installation. Right from the installer. And this is the only place where it has the ad.
    As for Trackpad++, it's completely, 200% free from any 3rd party stuff, including the ads. It's proudly clean. Yeah.

    The technology used for displaying an ad in the Power Plan Assistant is called OpenCandy. This is not a spyware. In fact, some of the most trusted antivirus and antispyware makers use the OpenCandy during the installation. OpenCandy can only be embedded into installer. WinAmp, for example, comes with OpenCandy embedded precisely in the same way as into Power Plan Assistant. Right from within the installer, OpenCandy will make an offer, recommendation to install some (clean) software. You can agree or decline. No hidden spyware - you may check with all the known antiviruses on this planet.

    Normally, the user shall be provided with an option - accept the offer or decline it. No one had ever reported anything like this, and, I have just checked on 2 computers, the option is there! Very strange!

    @JayAlsman: Just saw your edit. Ah, great! Good to know everything is working as intended!

    @All: I have got very good news by the way. The brand new Windows 8 OS will be supported very soon, both 32- and 64-bit. I already have a working aplha-version! Plus the new features are coming! Keep an eye on the September updates.

    That's brilliant Vlad!! Am just waiting for your Trackpad++ driver befor I install Windows 8 because it has already released in DreamSpark and my university has got it. So, waiting for your driver before I install Windows 8.

    Small question: Are you implementing those swiping gestures which MS has talked about? Like, swipe from right for charms bar, from left for recent apps and from bottom for app options? Also, hope you can fix the horizontal scrolling part. It is really buggy.

    And, the three finger and four finger gestures are brilliant!! Really love it!!

    The "invert swiping direction" for 3/4-finger gestures behave weird. The one for 3 fingers control horizontal swipe, and the one for 4 fingers control vertical swipe.

    Feature requests:

    - Ability to adjust pointer acceleration.

    - Ability to adjust scrolling acceleration independently. I'd like faster scrolling, but only a little acceleration.

    - More fine-tuned settings for the different speeds.

    - Get to choose what the different 3/4-finger swipes actually do.

    Is there a minimum donation amount to get the serial number? Not that I want to be cheap, I'll try to donate what I think the software is worth, but just checking...

    @pratnala: the top-priority task is to "just support" Windows 8. Think of it as of the port of the current feature set to a new OS. And sure, the next task will be to optimize the features for Windows 8 specifically (where it's possible).

    @ajp_anton: the recommended donation is 20 USD. It's just the recommendation, though. Every happy user chooses the amount absolutely freely. This is why it's called a "donation". Also, just to remind: the features are no different, whether you entered the serial number or not. The only difference is that the Trackpad++ will never ask you about any mandatory updates anymore. Still, I would highly recommend to update manually once in 2 months or so, because the new features are coming from time to time.
    Oh, and thank you very much for posting these feature requests, highly appreciate them.

    This finally happened

    Here are the stable BETA builds of the Power Plan Assistant & Trackpad++ for Windows 8.

    As always, please install the Boot Camp drivers first (I guess most people have them installed already), then Power Plan Assistant, then Trackpad++.

    http://powerplan7.com/Power_Plan_Assistant_30a_Setup_09042012.exe

    http://powerplan7.com/Trackpad_Plus_Plus_Driver_Control_Module_23b_Setup_0903201 2.exe

    Notice: please use at your own risk, no one is forcing You to install anything.

    As always, just any feedback is highly appreciated.
