Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

@ALL: I recommend to verify the installer with VirusTotal.com, you will see that the package is 100% clean, as reported by more than 50 antivirus and antimalware engines. As for the reputation scores, they are not the best measure - e.g. I update the files weekly, so there will never be enough users of the same (bit exact) executable to really gain the reputation thing, as calculated by some institutions. Website hosting location does not really matter, because the files are anyways hosted via FileCluster.com, with the mirrors both in the USA and EU.

 

Yes, I agree, the thread is too old, and too outdated. Not only the first pages, but I would say pages 1 to 60 contain the discussions which are not relevant anymore. The software has evolved dramatically, and now has the simple automatic installation, fully configurable multitouch gestures, etc., etc. - all of the things it had obviously missed initially.

    What I would really like is to hear more feedback. Good, bad, any. I mean, not on the regular version, but on the beta builds posted on the previous page.

    And yes, not only Windows 8 is supported in these beta builds, but also Retina Macbook support has been greatly enhanced. Both the Power Plan Assistant and Trackpad++ are now 100% Retina-compatible.

    Does the new version give anything for Win7 users on an old non-pro Macbook?

     

    Another weird behavior: when clicking using 2 fingers for a right-click (sometimes double-finger tapping is hard with slippery fingers when they're dry or cold), it seems to add a left click to the mix. Or something else weird.

     

    Example 1: click on text somewhere on a webpage. Don't move the cursor, wait a few seconds, and double-finger click again in the same spot. It will select the word under the cursor (as if you double-clicked it) and then right-click the selected word.

    Example 2: double-finger click on an URL. You will both right-click and left-click the link. The new page will load, and on top of it you will get the right-click menu.

     

     

    I'll donate as soon as I can afford more than $1. Hoping that my features will be added soon =).

    Does anyone else get an unhandled exception on a standard user account?

     

    I haven't seen this error mentioned, except by thefa last year (https://discussions.apple.com/message/13280437#13280437). I get the same behavior where it seems to work on the admin account, but fails when I use my daily standard account.

     

    I'm using Win7 Pro 64-bit on a MBP Retina. I tried reinstalling the TP++ module, but it still gives the same error.

    I confirm, the issue is there in the current build. Hopefully will be fixed in one of the next weekly builds. However, most of the users will never notice this thing. Because normally after you install Windows you have admin-level account plus UAC. This is the way absolutely most of the people use Windows. And there are no problems in such configuration.

    Hey Vladimir,

     

    I'm having real problems with the beta.  I'm running Win 8 64bit Release Preview on the latest MacBook Air - I have no VMs anywhere, just a Mac Partition and a Win Partition, completely seperate.

     

    I have installed the Power Plan Assistant and verified it can turn off the backlight keys.  Then I install the Trackpad 2.3 beta and go through the installation process, when I get to driver installation it gives me the 'Red Banner' warning twice and I tell it to install the driver anyway - it then reboots automatically.

     

    When Windows comes back up, I have no mouse control at all I can use the keyboard to navigate around and on the desktop there is an error saying that the control module cannot communicate with the Trackpad++ driver. The only way to get mouse control back is to use the keyboard to navigate into the Control Panel and delete the Trackpad++ driver.

     

    In the Device Manager there is an error on the Trackpad++ driver, saying that the digital signature cannot be verified. 

     

    I have attempted 3 times now, completely uninstalling Trackpad, Power Plan Assistant and re-installing them, but every time it comes out the same

     

    Any ideas?  Are there some log files I can send you to help you?

    @seb101: Hold on! I have fixed something and I have a new build for you. This SHALL fix your issue. The only thing is, being a developer I have access to a new MSDN version of the Windows 8, which is RTM, I do not test the software on Release Prewiev verison of the Windows 8. So, I am unsure if this helps for those who have RP version of the Windows 8. But this build 100% works with RTM, 32-bit and 64-bit.

     

    So, simply reinstall. Make sure to exit the Trackpad++ Control Module from Windows tray before reinstalling.

    Other than the issue which had happened to the user seb101, the feedback is solidly positive. Thank you all the good people for the feedback emails. So the new build becomes official. Has become. Now you can download the files normally via website of the project.

     

    Oh yes, Boot Camp 4.0 b4326 has been proven to work with Windows 8 (on Mid-2009 Macbook Pro at least). So, it appears like the Windows 8 has been silently supported by Apple recently. Very silently.

    @ajp_antonRegarding the right-click in Boot Camp. There are actually four types of right-click on a Mac, three of which work under Windows with Trackpad++:

     

    (Mac OS and Windows) 1. Control + click (oldest method of right-click that originated on the first Macintosh)

    (Mac OS and Windows) 2. Two finger tap (second oldest method of right-click that originated on the first non-unibody MacBook)

    (Mac OS only)              3. Two finger click (third oldest method of right-click that originated on the first unibody MacBook)

    (Mac OS and Windows) 4. Lower right region click (implemented at the same time as above method)

     

    1,2 and 4 work with with Trackpad++. 2-finger tap works quite reliably (actually, I don't think in the Mac OS X it is any better).

    Anyways, thanks al lot for your post! I already added 2-finger physical click to a feature request list.

    Well, 3 works for me. I hold two fingers on the pad for a while to make sure it doesn't register as a right-click. Then I press the button while holding these fingers.

    It will register as a right-click immediately as the button is pressed (not released), but the problem is that in certain situations (the ones I mentioned above) it will also register as a left-click at the same time, except it behaves a bit weird (the select-word example).

    However, now I see that this "bug" also exists with the Bootcamp drivers... Maybe if you implement this feature in your drivers, it will overwrite the Bootcamp behavior? =)

    Hi man,

     

    Running Windows 8 Pro - RTM. I'm having these problems and can't get TP++ to work: 

     

    Right clicking and running as admin for everything.

     

    1. After installing powerplan the my desktop now has "Test Mode, Windows 8 Pro Build 9200" in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop.

     

    2. After I install powerplan I go ahead and install trackpad++. However after I click "finish" it closes down and says it failed. No auto-restart.

     

    So that's it. Thanks for your efforts, hope you can find away to solve these issues I'm having. Happy to donate.

    Very strange, as by following precisely the same procedure on a clean, just installed Windows 8 b9200 x64 which is RTM I receive no errors at all. How exactly it says "failed", could you clarify please?

     

    When testing the current build today on a clean Windows 8 RTM I have detected a following Trackpad++ installation problem (and I want to make sure that everyone knows the workaround!): WITH THE CURRENT BUILD DO NOT USE DPI 125% AND 150%! PLEASE SET DPI TO EITHER 100% OR 199/200% BEFORE RUNNING THE TRACKPAD++ INSTALLER. (This will be fixed in the next weekly build).
