Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    great, that fixed the issue. ie. my 125% dpi.

    good metro app switching would be great implementaion, like 4 finger swipe right.

    interaction like this would be a dream come true:

    thanks!

    Great! I am reposting the workaround then:

    WITH THE CURRENT BUILD DO NOT USE DPI 125% AND 150%! PLEASE SET DPI TO EITHER 100% OR 199/200% BEFORE RUNNING THE TRACKPAD++ INSTALLER. (This will be fixed in the next weekly build).

    Regarding the video link: thanks a lot, looks great! A lot of ideas there

    Also, just tested some metro apps. Two finger scrolling doesn't work with certain metro apps, of these they include:

    BBC Mobile and TechAU

    keep up the good work

    Another idea:

    When scrolling, send the scroll to the window that is under the cursor, like it does in OSX.

    I'm currently using WizMouse to do this, but maybe it could be included in this somehow?

    Also, WizMouse is limited to scrolling. For example the browser back/forward 3-finger swipes would be nice to behave similarly. I often have another small program window on top of the browser, or maybe I just minimized something and the browser window below isn't activated automatically. Would be nice to still have that swipe work.

    Not to mention my previous request to choose what those swipes do. I would change the vertical 3-finger swipe into scrolling to top/bottom, which I'd also like to be sent to the window under the cursor.

    "When scrolling, send the scroll to the window that is under the cursor, like it does in OSX."

    TRACKPAD++ DOES THIS SINCE SUMMER 2010 WHEN THE FIRST VERSION HAD ROLLED OUT.

    Furthermore, Trackpad++ uses precisely the same method as WizMouse for that, so please avoid using WizMouse when Trackpad++ is loaded. This is not necessary, and even could lead to a weird scrolling behavior.

    As always, thanks for the suggestions. Highly appreciate them.

    Haha, my bad, I always had WizMouse in the background since long before I found this driver and just assumed I needed it. Thanks for the info =).

    Anyway, it's only for scrolling and not the other things. Appreciate you looking into it. I believe I can donate something next week.

    Just a repost that certain metro apps don't work with scrolling, of the ones I've tested BBC News Mobile doesn't work and neither does TechAU app.

    A bit strange.

    Tip: Using Chrome + trackpad++ and Chromium wheel smooth scroller gives a very Mac OSX like experience.

    As for me, I like how Opera and Firefox make friends with Trackpad++. The recent versions of these browsers provide a really smooth experience.

    Thanks for posting, I will take a look on the Metro scrolling in the BBC News Mobile and TechAU app specifically.

    By the way: DPI bug has been fixed. Feel free to set 125%, 150%, 199%, 200% - whatever setting you like. By the way, I have heard that 199% works better than 200% on the Retina Macbook Pro (in general, I mean; it's not Trackpad++ related).

    Hey Vladimir

    I'm using my bootcamp partition inside a VM (Parallels) aswell, and it really holds me back of using your drivers. Do you plan on adding support for this? Can you just manually close the trackpad++ processes/disable the features inside the trackpad++ application when running inside the VM? Or would that still cause problems in the native move and inside the VM?

    Thanks

    The serial only works for Trackpad++, not Power Plan Assistant.

    It feels like they should be linked somehow, but I'll make a tiny donation for PPA also, letting my TP donation cover both.

    Well, actually, these are two absolutely different projects... In addition, the users are not forced to use Power Plan Assistant continuously. Only 64-bit users require to install it, but can remove it then. Sure, the donation of any size is highly appreciated! Thanks a lot for donating already, by the way!

    @Contradel: The best, absolutely reliable (of course ) choice is simply not use the Boot Camp partition for booting, i.e. to have the virtual Windows installation in OS X, completely virtual. But I realize, not much drive space is offered by Apple... so I will try to come to some solution on this again. My top choice would be to let Trackpad++ detect that it's inside the VM somehow... but it's not all, the problem is that the drivers shall directly co-exist, without extra reboots/reinstalls/etc.

    @All: I'm working on the new gestures for Windows 8. Get prepared for something really nice

    Hey Vladimir: any chance you could have a changelog page for trackpad++ (and powerplan assistant) on your own website? As power users we really should be able to know what's been added/improved/fixed/changed!

    E.g. I'm at 2.5e for powerplan assistant and 2.2b for trackpad++ and have no idea what lies in store for me in trackpad++ 2.3b and PPA 3.0a!!!

    I'd like to know, and it's laborious checking out the settings/program features to see if anything's different (as I'm not very good at 'spot the difference' :P)!

    Thanks

    Good to hear about the new gestures for Windows 8. I've been waiting for something that realy utilizes Win 8 features (like the video I posted).

    I'm actually using Windows 8 for my main OS on the Macair via Bootcamp, so new gestures are always a godsend.

    Feature requests in order of priority:

    1. Tab switching in Firefox & other browsers. (Jitouch for OSX does it perfectly. You hold one finger in the center of the trackpad and tap with a finger left or right of that finger to switch to previous or next tab).

    2. Three or four finger swiping/dragging/snapping between metro applications and desktop.

    3. Pinch to zoom in and out in Firefox/browsers.

    These things implemented and trackpad++ would be pretty much 100% competitive with the OSX experience.

    Yea there's a lot in it. SDD space is one of it, however the main point is that I need to be able to use Windows natively, I need to be able to connect a microcontroller via a USB to Serial converter and have it talk with Atmel Studio. Something that doesn't seem to work at all through Parallels. And then of course there's the speed reduction which is pretty hefty.

    Having two Windows installations to keep track off would simply be a mess, I bet you agree ;-)

    I tried having your driver installed while inside Parallels, as long as I disable your drivers it seemed to work, but I didn't dig very deep of course. Thanks for your answer.
