Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

@ALL: I recommend to verify the installer with VirusTotal.com, you will see that the package is 100% clean, as reported by more than 50 antivirus and antimalware engines. As for the reputation scores, they are not the best measure - e.g. I update the files weekly, so there will never be enough users of the same (bit exact) executable to really gain the reputation thing, as calculated by some institutions. Website hosting location does not really matter, because the files are anyways hosted via FileCluster.com, with the mirrors both in the USA and EU.

 

Yes, I agree, the thread is too old, and too outdated. Not only the first pages, but I would say pages 1 to 60 contain the discussions which are not relevant anymore. The software has evolved dramatically, and now has the simple automatic installation, fully configurable multitouch gestures, etc., etc. - all of the things it had obviously missed initially.

    Someone, anyone, who already got the Retina 13" (not 15"! 15" is supported already), could you please contact me, preferably via email. Basically, there is a small (yet important!) thing you can do to help our community (including yourself!). Thank you in advance.

    Hello Volodia,

    was wondering, is this driver made only for built in trackpad, can it work on apples magic trackpad? i tryed to install the tracpad++ but it always showed me a message that it can locate a trackpad, any help?

    Hello,

     

    Trackpad++, only works with the built-in trackpads. The compatible Macbooks are listed one post above.

    Please do NOT try it with wireless Magic Trackpad... Neither try it with other devices than the Boot Camped Macs listed above!

    Thanks to all the good people who tested on the Retina 13". Supported now! (So, basically, all Mid-2009 and later generations of the Macbook Pro and Air are supported right now). Also, high-DPI support is there, so you'll get an adequate Trackpad++ GUI with both 13" and 15" Retina models.

    Vladimar, amazing work. Wijndows 8 is sweet candy on Retina Macbbok Pro. Not without Trackpad++, only with it. Love all the gestures! Cant imagine my work without them. My Q: Is there option to change the scrolling acceleration formula? Meaning is, finer tweak than 3 presets in the current Trackpad++? Thanks!!

    @y.orim: right, there are "only" 3 scrolling speed presets in the current version of the Trackpad++. However, the default accelerated/natural preset is really optimal. What specifically are you trying to change? Could you clarify.

    Some people have been asking about two-finger click (not tap) to act as the right-click when tap-to-click and two-finger tap for right-click are disabled. I have a good news, there is now a workaround to enable two-finger click (not tap) to act as the secondary click. To do so, DISABLE both the tap-to-click and the secondary click in the Trackpad++ Control Module. Not that intuitive, I know

    But, anyways, this is not the recommended mode of operation. The recommended one is: tap-to-click and two-finger tap enabled, tap-style dragging disabled (because ordinary dragging with click / two fingers is always enabled and works perfectly with Trackpad++, unlike with the Boot Camp driver).

    Posted earlier in this topic, but new people still ask me a lot, so I think I will simply re-publish this time after time.

    So, for the new people, here are the current capabilities of the Trackpad++ for Windows 8.

     

    Supported Apple Macbook Pro generations:  Early 2009,  Mid 2009,  Mid 2010,  Early 2011,  Late 2011,  Mid 2012 / Retina.

    Supported Apple Macbook Air generations:  Mid 2009,  Late 2010,  Mid 2011,  Mid 2012.

     

    Improved basics (vs. Boot Camp drivers 4.x):

     

    1.) Accelerated/natural scrolling model implemented;

    2.) Better pointer ballistics (i.e. how a pointer speed depends on a finger speed; six optimal presets built-in);

    3.) Bug-free dragging with two fingers (both fingers allowed to move freely, unlike with Boot Camp-native driver), plus a unique option to increase the pointer speed while dragging;

    4.) User-customizable option to ignore accidental trackpad input when typing, option to eliminate accidental drag'n'drop actions (for tap-style dragging);

     

    Advanced multitouch gestures:

     

    1.)   Horizontal 2-finger swiping to the left from outside the right edge (action: show/hide Charms Bar, the gesture shall be performed like this: http://powerplan7.com/OutsideSwipe.gif)

    2.)   Horizontal 2-finger swiping to the right from outside the left edge (action: show/hide Metro Switcher if at least 1 Metro app is running)

    3.)   Horizontal 3-finger swiping (action: back / forward)

    4.)   Vertical 3-finger swiping (action: zoom in / zoom out)

    5.)   3-finger tap (action: middle mouse button)

    6.)   Horizontal 4-finger swiping (action: show/hide Charms Bar)

    7.)   Vertical 4-finger swiping (action: minimize/restore open windows)

    8.)   4-finger tap (action: show/hide Start screen)

    I have a question: I have two users accounts and in one of them trackpad++ doesnt run? Is trackpad++ supported in many accounts? thanks!!

    @y.orim: Sure, the recent version has been tested with multiple Windows user accounts.

    The only issue with the second user is that Trackpad++ does not auto-start in other accounts but the one it's been installed under. To run it inside the different user account: using File Explorer, go to "C:\Program Files\TrackpadPlusPlus" and execute "Trackpad++ Control Module for Windows 8.exe" as administrator. If you have Windows 7, execute "Trackpad++ Control Module for Windows 7.exe", respectively.
