Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Here's the bad news. Once you uninstall the driver, reinstallation fails. Also, Vladimir hasn't given us a way to rollback the driver from trackpad++ to the original driver. In other words, there is no real way to completely uninstall the software and drivers to get back to where you started.

    What I had to do when I experienced this problem was to uninstall Power Plan Assistant and Trackpad++, clean out the registry of all traces of those programs, uninstall ALL mouse drivers, restart Windows 7 to let it redetect devices, and then run the bootcamp driver DVD again. Then I was able to reinstall Power Plan Assistant and Trackpad++.

    I've faced similar issues, an un-installer would be nice (one that actually works). I've got all sorts of crap loaded on my system now and I'm left with this trackpad that kinda works, kinda doesn't.

    I have been testing the software, and its installation procedure, as well as how to uninstall and reinstall the software, and the software runs without any problems. I'm using a MacBook Air 10 inch running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. There do not seem to be any problems whatsoever, except when running Remote Desktop Connection sessions. When running RDC sessions, the remote windows server does not always recognize the trackpad features on the Mac - but that's to be expected and is not a flaw in the software.

    There is one feature that I would like to see in the software - namely, automatically disabling the trackpad when an external mouse is used. This is a very useful feature of Mac OS. Even with the feature of the software to disable the trackpad while typing, I find myself hitting the trackpad at times in ways that cause the cursor to jump unexpectedly while typing.

    How about a dedicated button and keyboard shortcut to disable/enable trackpad?

    An issue is, the "bug-free" detection of an external mouse is simply the pain in Windows...

    A dedicated button and keyboard shortcut to disable / enable the trackpad would be great!

    Below is the link to a build with a new tray icon context menu item "Enable Trackpad Device".

    No keyboard shortcut at a moment, so no way to re-enable the trackpad not having a mouse.

    (Having mouse, simply check this menu item, trackpad device will be re-enabled instantly).

    Here is how you can update the Trackpad++ Control Module to this experimental version:

    1. Download http://trackpad.powerplan7.com/TrackpadPlusPlusControlModule14a.rar and

    unpack the archive (it contains a single file "Trackpad++ Control Module.exe")

    2. Exit Trackpad++ Control Module (click "Exit" in tray icon context menu)

    3. Now replace the file "C:\Program Files\TrackpadPlusPlus\Trackpad++ Control Module.exe"

    with the one you unpacked in step 1 and restart Windows.

    As always, Your feedback is highly appreciated.

    Well, the situation is pretty unique, as no one had ever reported such an issue with Macbook Air 11".

    To the contrary, some Macbook Air 11" users are reporting a kind of "breakthrough in Boot Camp trackpad experience" with Trackpad++. And in fact I am exteremely pleased to read such testimonials. You know, we all love our Macs, and, for many users, the better Boot Camp experience gets, the closer our notebooks are getting to be named THE TRULY PERFECT DEVICE. We do need Windows, too! Not just OS X, regardless of how perfect OS X - native experience is... That is why I have started to rewrite this (Apple's not best, isn't it? ) piece of driver software. And that is why the Power Plan Assistant application with its own Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/Power management and keyboard backlight control (for Macbook Pro) is there.

    Regarding your issue: please let me suppose, there is something wrong within the Windows 7 system after the SP1 installation, or, for some reason, wrong HID-Compatible Mouse instance was listed first -> you got your issue... Or, you have not installed the Power Plan Assistant in Boot Camp-compatible mode first?

    Just so that if any one has the same problem they can easy fix it, I found that when I uninstalled trackpad++ and changed the driver to the orginial one my trackpad stopped worked.  To fix the problem I went to the device manager and uninstalled "Apple Multitouch" and "Apple Multitouch Mouse".  I then ran bootcamp 3.2, restarted the system and the trackpad started working.

    Vlad,

    I can't seem to get the Beta to work.  I can see a check mark in the tray icon that shows the trackpad being enabled, but I can't clear the check mark to turn it off.

    When will this support gestures?

    I would happily donate $50 if this software could enable 3-finger middle click - it can be enabled by this software on OSX: http://www.boastr.de/

    Can anyone tell me if there is an improvement in the trackpad++ version 1.4a drivers?

    I'm currently using 1.3a and didn't want to go through the (sometimes cumbersome) process of installing a new version if there is no change in features.

    Thanks.

    Wow, you were too fast So, correct, today the new version, 1.4a, is out. First of all, this version of the Trackpad++ has a noticeably simplified installation procedure: it will install/update the driver automatically, during the Trackpad++ Control Module setup. Another new thing is adjustable scrolling direction. Now it defaults to Lion-like mode. Also, the scrolling acceleration curve has been tuned and is even better than before. If you wish to have OS X Safari-like smooth scrolling, do not use IE or Chrome. I suggest to use Opera (best of all) or Firefox with smooth scrolling enabled. Finally, dragging exprience is improved, you shall notice it immediately. But, just like before, tap-style dragging is not recommended, although is fully supported. There is no way to remove the tap-drag delay caused by a lower level driver in the Apple HID stack, unless the entire stack is rewritten from the scratch. This is why tap-style dragging can't yet be as perfect as in OS X. As always, please feel free to post just any feedback here, good, bad, whatever. No software is perfect, but the new version shall definitely be an improvement for all of the users. Ah, and I forgot there is now a 100% working option to temporary disable the trackpad surface. See the new item of the '++' context menu in the notification area of Windows taskbar.

    great, thanks Vladimir. Didn't realise it had just been released today , decided to check your website after some time and noticed the newer version so thought it had been there for a while.

    Will definitely try it out.
