Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Thanks Vlad, I decided to reinstall because I don't think bootcamp properly installed the trackpad drivers and yours are the best I could find. I was wondering how you update Trackpad++ since it is mandatory to do so every week. Am I missing something obvious?

    Hi Vlad. Thanks for your work on this.

    I've been using trackpad for a long time now. I am a registered user. Have gone though upgrades etc. so I'm aware of all the neccesary steps.

    I just upgraded to 3.0a and for some reason all 3 and 4-finger gestures don't work anymore? Pinch to zoom doesn't work either, which was one of the reasons I decided to upgrade (I was on 2.4a before and hadn't gotten around to ugrading till now). My 3/4-finger gestures were working before the upgrade, but not after.

    Everything else is fine, just these gestures. Any thoughts on why?

    Again, I did follow all steps correctly, that I'm aware of, as I have done in the past (making sure PPA is installed, closing the Trackpad control module before upgrading etc. etc.).... so not sure what happened.

    Thanks for your help!

    EDIT: I DID A SECOND MANUAL RESTART AND EVERYTHING IS FINE. THANKS!

    After the few first minutes of usage, what can I say, simply fantastic!!! A new option to assign application to a 3 or 4 finger gesture is indeed THE Christmas gift! And the new control panel is oh-so-pretty! Vlad I love you! Merry XMas!!!

    Is the signed driver version of this out yet?

    I am unable to test this on several systems until a signed version is out. :-(

    Wow... This is by far the best version.... I found the new interface a little difficult at first, but now that I see how it's organized, I quite like it.  Much more customizable!  And this driver seems very stable.  I like three-finger gestures so much better!

    Thank you once again!

    Hey Vladimir,

    I was wondering how to re-enable the default right click action (two fingers+thumb click) in Trackpad++. If I re-enable it through the Boot Camp settings, Trackpad++ will quickly disable it. How can I go about enabling this?

    By the way, the driver is fantastic! Thank you very much for your hard work.

    @therave39 - I used to use my computer this way all the time.  However, I've actually gotten so used to not using the thumb click method, it feels weird to do it.  Though, I still use it all the time for dragging purposes, as I prefer that to the 3-finger drag.  But to answer your question, I could never get that to work correctly.  The closest I got was the bottom-right corner click, I would reach back with my thumb to right-click (as if there was a right-touchpad button like on most PC laptops).

    But as I said, I've now gotten so used to tapping without clicking and now prefer it.  So weird, I only switched about 1.5 months ago, and wouldn't go back.  It took about a month to get used to.

    Great work Vlad. This is fantastic.

    Had a question for you. Currently, if 2 finger swipe for back/forward is enabled, horizontal scrolling is disabled. Can't both be enabled and detect which one should be used when on-the-fly? In OS X, say I am in Chrome and the page doesn't have a horizontal scroll bar, 2 finger swipe does back/forward. However, if content can be scrolled horizontally, it doesn't. Can't something similar be done? And oh, please include that 2 finger swipe from top/bottom for app bar. Makes the 2 finger edge gestures complete from a Windows 8/8.1 point of view

    Thanks a lot for Trackpad++ 3 and Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you!

    Hi Vlad,

    I installed the 12252013 3c version and the driver seems to be working but I am getting a .Net failure for the app/settings. Have you seen or heard of this from anyone else yet? I will try to uninstall/reinstall but wanted to give a heads up. If it continue to error, I will post the exception chain.

    Thanks,

    Kurt

    Ok,

    So the uninstall/reinstall seems to have done the trick but the uninstall was a bit tricky. Even after quiting TrackPad++, the uninstall got stuck on a few files where I had to kill some processes in order to get the uninstall to finish correctly. The uninstall helper screen wouldn't kill them so I had to use TaskManager. Overall glad to be up again but if you want additional details regarding the difficulties to help make improvements, just let me know.

    Thanks again!

    Kurt

    @ALL: Thanks for all of the feedback! Happy holidays everybody!

    Actually, the beta program is now open again. The next test build contans the following improvements over 3.0a:

    - Noticeably improved precision of a 3-finger drag (shall be especially noticeable when dragging slowly, e.g. when selecting a small block of text).

    - Scrolling shall now work in all of the applications (classic desktop applications and Windows 8 apps) regardless of the 'Respect Focus' Trackpad++ Control Module option. With the old 2.x builds, and even with the previous build 3.0a, the option to respect focus (i.e. scroll in an underlying window or UI element, no matter is it focused or not) works perfectly only with classic desktop applications. For example, Windows 8 native PDF viewer was not scrollable if this option is activated (that's why the option hasn't been active by default). Now this should totally fixed.

    http://powerplan7.com/Trackpad_Plus_Plus_Driver_Control_Module_Setup_30b_TEST_12 282013.exe

    I would appreciate if somebody who has been using the existing 3-finger drag feature could provide some feedback regarding the precision improvement. You should now get the nearly the same feel as in OS X.

    @AnubisKB: Thanks for reporting. Very strange indeed... I have had zero reports so far. Could you contact me via email with information about an exception during uninstall?

    @pratnala: Thanks. I like an idea, but the question is whether it's somehow possible in Windows at all. In OS X this works in Safari and maybe in some other apps but this looks like per-app feature integration.

    @therave39: I would recommend the same - please consider using 2-finger tap for right-click. It works very well, and is almost the same as 2-finger click, just a bit easier and totally silent

    @Omikron: No, but the signed version should hopefully become available in the not-so-far future. Especially if the community would transform positive emotions into not-that-seldom donations

    Happy New Year!

    Cheers,

    Vladimir
