Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Hey Vladimir, thank you for the simplified installation -  much appreciated as well as the other minor improvements in 1.4a

    You mention "rewriting the entire Apple HID stack from scratch" to get the regular tap scrolling to work properly. Is this a possibility and just a matter of taking the time to do so? I would be willing to make another donation for your time to do this. I'm sure others would too. Maybe you can charge a small fee for version 1.5...?

    Obviously additional functions like 3 and 4 finger gestures would be great but I would prefer the basic functionality to work properly as a priority before worrying about anything else.

    At the moment I have tap dragging disabled (which in its current state is unusable) and am using "2x dragging speed" enabled which is quite helpful. Regular tap dragging would be ideal though. Could you consider this for a future release and perhaps charge a small fee, if it's a matter of time availability to rewrite the driver stack?

    Vladimir,

    Is there any chance that your drivers will work with the Magic Trackpad?

    To Skye19: to completely rewrite Apple HID stack, an enormous amount of time and effort is required; furthermore, not having the open hardware specs/interfaces (of course, Apple has no public documentation on how to program their device) there is no guarantee of success. And, to restate, this is VERY, VERY, VERY COMPLEX programming task. But somewhere in the not-so-near future, this could happen. The perfect Trackpad driver for Windows. I want it. You want it. Everybody wants it. Except of Apple

    A few more comments to address the latest questions above in this topic:

    - Yes, Magic Trackpad support could become truth in the future;

    - 3+ finger gestures will be supported only if I rewrite the Boot Camp HID stack completely.

    Can you tell me how to uninstall this thing completely?

    This driver screwed up my USB mouse drivers too.

    EVERYONE ELSE reading this: DO NOT INSTALL THIS DRIVER.

    The driver's corner right click behavior works worse than Bootcamp 3.2/4.0 driver, and this will screw up any other USB mouses you are using. (I have unplugged everything when I was installing this, but this still screwed it up.)

    Please let me know how to completely uninstall this.

    I can't believe I fell for this.

    Thank you Vladimir!  I removed version 1.3a and set the drivers back to the original state.  I then installed version 1.4a and the installation went smoothly.  No installation problems at all.  The new viersion works great, particularly the feature that allows me to disable the trackpad when using a mouse - for me, that's the most important reason to use your driver.

    Thanks Vladimir. The possibility of a "perfect" trackpad driver for windows in the future sounds great.

    By the way, I've tried the new lion-style inverted scrolling and it doesn't seem to work. Checking the box makes no difference to the direction of the scrolling.

    @Vencents....

    I don't know how you screwed up your installation but this trackpad driver has ONLY improved usage for me.

    I also use a logitech USB mouse which work perfectly fine as well.

    Haters gonna hate...

    Regarding the Lion-like (inverted) scrolling, several people have already reported that this feature 100% works (and in fact right after the installation it shall be enabled by default). Of course, it works for me, either. An in-depth testing has been performed before making this new version public, so I am confident that this feature should work well. We have to investigate what prohibits it from functioning in your specific case.

    Just to clarify: the scrolling behavior does not change in real time, i.e. you need to click 'Apply & Save' button first, after changing the 'Invert Scrolling Direction' setting.

    If ignore accidental input (set to 'All Trackpad Input') really works for you (you can check by trying to type as you move the pointer), then inverted scrolling will absolutely work, since both of the features are located within the same driver module, one next to another!

    Ah, regarding the corner right click: I never thought someone is still using it, isn't a two-finger right click way more intuitive, fast, and accurate gesture?

    To uninstall the Trackpad++, roll back the HID-Compliant Mouse driver via Device Manager, this is a pretty straightforward procedure. You may also google to find more information on how to roll back the driver in Windows 7.

    I'm not sure why inverted scrolling doesn't work for me.

    Ignore accidental input does indeed work for me.

    I did apply and save and closed the control panel to make sure, but no luck with inverted scrolling. It doesn't bother me becasue I don't think I would use it anyway, but thought I would report it.

    On my MacBook Air 11" running OS X Lion:

    1.  Inverted scrolling works just fine - I can toggle it on an off from the control module

    2. The "accidental input" feature works just fine - I set mine to ignore all trackpad input while typing

    3.  The feature to disable the trackpad while using a mouse works just fine - I use a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse.

    I would like to see the corner right click feature made available since I personally don't like the two finger right click, but that's a matter of preference.

    I've noticed a few poeple saying the corner right click doesn't work and Vladimir has acknowledged this it seems.

    Strangely enough, my corner right click does in fact work. Is it not meant to? I can two-finger right click and clicking in the bottom right corner has the same effect as per the bootcamp driver.

    The right corner click works for me as well, and seems to have the same functionality as with the bootcamp driver.

    For some reason, when I use the two finger click for right click, it also registers it as a left click when I release it. For example, If I want to right click a link on a webpage to open it in a new tab, the right click menu opens up but it ends up following the link after I lift my fingers from the trackpad.

    This only happens if I actually press down and click the trackpad. It works as it should on Tap-to-Click, but I prefer the tactile feeling of actually pressing down. Does anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks for the driver, keep up the good work.

    I too have been burned by these installs.  My System Restore isn't available for some reason.  I've lost EVERYTHING on my Windows partition due to having to just give up and start from scratch.  Spent the last 3 hours trying to uninstall this software using the keyboard only, and reinstalling the Apple drivers.  No luck.

    AVOID!!!!!
