Q: A NEW TRACKPAD DRIVER IS OUT

I've got a good news for Macbook Pro / Air owners: a new multitouch trackpad driver for Windows 7 is out.

This driver (codenamed 'Trackpad++') neither contains, nor modifies the original Apple code.
However, it relies on Apple drivers stack for raw hardware access, that's why Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first.

Features of the Trackpad++ driver (vs. Boot Camp 3.1 driver):

1. Improved pointer ballistics (pointer movement can be very slow or very fast, depending on the finger speed);

2. Dramatically improved two-finger scrolling experience: Mac OS X-similar (accelerated) scrolling model implemented;

3. Elimination of the most annoying Windows issue of Apple Multitouch Trackpad, i.e. false detection of drag'n'drop actions;

4. Trackpad++ Control Module for adjusting the Trackpad settings.

Supported Macbook Pro generations: Early 2008, Late 2008, Early 2009, Mid 2009;
Supported Macbook Air generations: all generations;
Supported Windows versions: Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit (Boot Camp 3.1 shall be installed first).

You may visit http://trackpad.powerplan7.com for details.

Just by the way: there was an extensive beta-testing phase, and a lot of volunteers have tried Trackpad++ already, so I can assure You that the driver is rock-stable.

P.S. I wrote this driver. My another project is Power Plan Assistant - a popular utility for Boot Camp-enabled Macbook Pro and Air notebooks.

Cheers, and enjoy Trackpad++, something Apple definitely have had to implement a while ago... but I know and You know - it never would...

    Vlad, I think Ive managed to wipe the drivers/software completely, as I just reinstalled them and they were unregistered.

    As I said, before that I downloaded latest bootcamp drivers trhought bootcamp assistant. Then I ran them and hit "repair".

    I unfortunatelly haven't had any success with horizontal scroll. Even with the respect focus enabled. My only guess is that there's something not compatible among newest bootcamp drivers, macbook pro mid 2012 15", windows 7 x64.

    Also, I keep feeling that the auto-startup for both powerplan and trackpad are being slowed down. 10-15 later everything else has loaded. I searched the "services" so I could check if a delay was set for them but I did not even find the apps there.

    Are you aware of the bug where scrolling doesn't work withing Lync 2013 running on Windows 7 64bit?

    @timelover: The startup shall be nearly instant. Even on non-SSD models no more than 2-3 seconds. Clearly something is wrong with your Windows system. About horizontal scrolling: I can ensure you, the scrolling commands are being sent. Although, yes, in Windows there are many software capabilities to intercept or block those commands, and not all applications even support the horizontal scrolling feature!

    @KaliPanda: When 'respect focus' option is turned on, the driver is completely unaware of what client application (or window) the scrolling commands are being sent to. So, if 'respect focus' is on and the scrolling works in at least one application, the driver itself works correctly. By the way I sometimes cannot scroll with real mouse wheel neither in Outlook nor in Lync - and this happens on my Windows PC, with stock Microsoft mouse drivers. In fact even in Windows 8.1, there is no consistent approach to scrolling yet. For the same reason, no way to provide really perfect scrolling to ALL applications - simply because Windows OS leaves it up to application how to handle the scrolling distance, focus, etc.

    Ok, I believe you. But now how can I fix it? (Besides clean installing window)

    Hi, I just realised about the horizontal sroll issue and upon searching about it I fell on this thread. I'm currently running windows 7 on MacBook Pro 13" mid 2012 non-retina. I've tried the horizontal scroll in severall applications with no success apart from google chrome where it registers it as vertical scrolling. Reinstalled the driver and nothing changed. Also found this http://www.autohotkey.com/board/topic/89522-ms-office-horizontal-scrolling-fix-f or-trackpad-driver/ however not sure how relevant it still is and don't really know how to try it out.

    EDIT: Just learned and tried out the autohotkey fix and horizontal scroll works in Excell when it previously didn't.

    To add some intrigue, from here horizontal scroll works perfectly fine. Except of, it isn't as smooth as in OS X Late-2013 rMBP 15", Windows 8.1 with latst updates, Bootcamp 5.1, Trackpad++ 3.0b

    Could it be a problem with mid-2012 models? Timelover is also using a mid 2012 model.

    @ALL: Thank you for joining the discussion, much appreciated.

    @timelover: It might be (but should not be!). As I had indicated a few months ago, now I am developing for Windows 8 and later versions, with no focus on Windows 7. Furthermore, I do not run Windows 7 right now (only Windows 8.1 Update 1), so I cannot check. One thing I can tell for sure, no changes have been made to Windows 7 version of the Trackpad++ since February. So there are no reasons to suddenly lose the hor. scroll. I wonder has it been working for you during the last few months?

    To go a little bit off-topic, Windows 8.1 Update1 + StartIsBack is a surprisingly good combo on the MBP. Also, high-DPI scaling is handled much better, with virtually zero issues (unlike in Windows 7). And, like I said, Trackpad++ is becoming more Windows 8-oriented. So it appears annum 2014 Windows 8.1.1 has become the best choice for building the Boot Camp...

    Vlad, funny thing my mac started having boot problems yesterday andnothing at all could fix it. Guess thats a sign. I removed the windows 7 and Ill try win 8 afterall. Ill report back as soon as I finish it, even if it takes weeks, as I HATE clean installs!!! Hope it works as expected.

    By the way, why you say win 8.1.1 is the best for bootcamp macbooks? It is based only on trackpads performance? Or you do see win 8 as an overall improvement? I truly cant see advantages.

    @timelover: Right now the Trackpad++ driver shall work equally well on Windows 7 and 8.1, what I really meant the future development may happen for Windows 8.x only. I think the noticeable benefits of Windows 8.1.1 vs. Windows 7 on the modern Macbooks are: fine 200% DPI support and availability of pixel doubling instead of blurry scaling; non-painful EFI mode installation and overall fine operation via EFI (which might mean not only faster boot, but also ability to enable second GPU via some EFI scripting and other Jedi arts ). But of course, those factors might be not relevant for all people, especially for non-Retina MBP or older MBA owners.

    Vlad, fresh Win 8.1.1 install, with all available updates. Fresh bootcamp drivers straight from apple servers. Still NO horizontal scroll. Respect focus makes no difference as well.

    Logic hypothesis 1: Microsoft pushed updates for both Win 7 and Win 8 which affected the trackpad driver.

    Logic hypothesis 2: Apple pushed updates for the bootcamp drivers, which did not affect the macbook model you are testing the software with.

    By the way, I have a mid 2012 cMPB 15" high-res. I didn't go with EFI as people said there are frequent nvidia and sound driver crashes.

    If you have any other trick or tweak that might help me out I'll be glad to test it out. Otherwise, please try to investigate this annoying issue.
