Unable to open .dmg files

I have a Mac OS X 10.4.11 and I was having trouble opening .dmg and .pkg files because Stuffit would open them automatically so I deleted Stuffit because I couldn't figure out how to change it. I am currently trying to download and install Microsoft Silverlight and it opens it to an ejected disk but when I try to click it to install it it's saying "there is no default application specified to open the document" I can either cancel or choose application... when I try to choose application I am unable to choose itself. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you, Alexis

Hi Azrockn, and a warm welcome to the forums! 🙂

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

While you may get help or a solution here, It's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, certainly feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

While you may get help or a solution here, It's quite acceptable to start a new topic of your own, certainly feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, on this side it gets hard to respond to more than one person at a time & their particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

But actually this is the 10.4.x/Tiger forums, maybe those in the10.6.x Installation & Setup could help you faster...

I had 10.6.x until my iMac died recently, & I'd be more than happy to try to help you here or in a new topic of your own, & might be able to from memory/experience... you decide! 🙂

STEP 1: Right-Click, or Control + Click on the DMG file, once it is fully downloaded. You will see a menu like this:

STEP 2: Choose the "Open With" menu item, then "DiskImageMounter". After a few moments, depending on the size of the DMG file, you will see the mounted Disk Image show up on your Desktop.

If it doesn't show, choose Other & you navigate to...

/System/Library/CoreServices/DiskImageMounter.app

For PKG files do the same, but choose Installer.app...

/Applications/Utilities/Installer.app

As an alternative, get the zip of Pacifist...

http://www.charlessoft.com/

Which can do both DMG & PKG.

I am having a similar problem.. one of my externals was having problems and wouldn't mount so I did this as per RyanRb:

Prep: Restart your machine so that it goes straight to the login window. Enter your user name and password. As soon as you press enter after your password, immediately hold down the shift key until the Finder finishes loading (this prevents any background startup items from running that might interfere).

1. Attach the drive to the computer and make sure you have another drive with enough free space to hold the entire capacity of the bad drive, not just it's used space, but the WHOLE size of the bad drive (for exception, see very bottom of this post).

2. In Terminal, type:
diskutil list
Look for the drive you want to recover in the "name" column, then write down it's "identifier" (ex. disk1s2)

3. In Terminal, type:
dd bs=512 if=/dev/disk#s# of=/my_directory/image.dmg conv=noerror,sync
!! Replace "disk#s#" with the identifier you wrote down before !!
!! Replace "/my_directory/" with the path to where you want to save !!
!! Replace "image.dmg" with the name you want to give the disk image (must end with .dmg) !!

and it worked and now shows up as "filename.dmg" but when I try to open it it says "no mountable file systems"
PLEASE HELP

I'm also having issues like this. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple support and have gone into a Apple store where I was there for 5 hours. After my .dmg file gets done downloading it will say verification failed. The tech at the Apple store was very nice, but kind of left me hanging. He has called a few times, but I've been busy. The tech says it's my internet, but it's only .dmg files and it's very upsetting because I got an Iphone about a week ago and haven't been able to download any .dmg files to update itunes or anything. I have a case id number and really don't know where to come from here. I'm kind of new to mac and don't know as much as I really should. Any help would be nice!
