Hello all. I've got a CD stuck in my drive and it won't come out. I've tried everything I can think of. The eject button on the keyboard is non responsive. Restarting and holding the mouse down isn't doing anything either.

This drive has never worked properly and I've been putting off getting it fixed. Looks like I need to do that soon. Especially since Apple Care is up in less than a year.

Generally it spits the discs out several times before it will take them. Some times it wont give them back, but nothing like this.

Is there any safe way to get this disc out before I take it to the Apple Store?

Thanks for any help,

20" Aluminum iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.3), 2G ram

    HI Marc,

Try the Terminal command here: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10333570-263.html

Your Terminal app is in Applications/Utilities

That didn't work, but I have an appointment at the Apple Store tomorrow morning. I'm thinking the drive is dead.

Just an update. Apple replaced the drive.

I just wanted to add my experience to this thread in case it can help others. I had an old windows cd that I put into my imac and it didn't mount and it wouldn't eject. I tried rebooting and the eject button, disk utilities and ejecting from there, itunes and ejecting from there, rebooting an holding the mouse button, etc.. etc.. nothing was working and my imac was booting up with an odd date and not connecting to wireless. I then got desperate and tried slipping a blank junk cd into the slot and it rubbed against the other cd which I guess was constantly spinning, it ground a bit and I thought, well that can't be good. I had been having trouble with the drive loading things very slowly for awhile now. I have a external drive that I use through usb most of the time as I HATE this artsy design that is not practical (ie monitor dies, I'm screwed, hard drive dies, I'm screwed, dvd/cd drive has trouble, I'm screwed, etc.. etc.. but sadly, I still love my mac :P). Anyway... I realized that anything rubbing against the cd inside the slot opening was "shaving" like a sanding grinder. So I stopped putting things made of plastic in the slot :P. I tried the metal paperclip trick I read on here somewhere. I bent the paperclip to make it straigth on one end. I stuck it in the top of the slot and found the edge of the spinning cd and I pressed down until the cd stopped spinning. I then removed the paperclip and within 2 seconds (the cd beginning to spin again) the cd mounted on the screen, I was then able to drag the icon to the trash and the stupid thing ejected. The drive is still working fine (well as fine as the piece of garbage worked in the first place, taking 40 minutes to load a couple gig of info). I bought the apple care 3 yr, but I just don't want anyone tearing apart my computer, I'll use my external drive from now on :P. I hope this helps somebody because this stuck cd was driving me batty for 2 days and I don't want anyone else to have to go through this if I can help it! Peace all!
