iPad mail won't let me delete or send emails to trash

Why? Am I missing a setting?

Otherwise... Love this thing!

Thanks

Hi, I had the same problem but I solved it, hopefully this will work for you.

I couldn't delete mail from the account I set up using my ISP mail account. I added my yahoo account and had no problem deleting from that account.

If you go to settings > mail, contacts, calendars > touch your account name > advanced > deleted mailbox > chose 'trash' under 'on the server' > then click the back buttons until you get to the screen that says 'done' so your settings are saved.

Before I changed it, it was set to 'on my iPad 'trash''.
As soon as I changed it, mail deleted from my ISP mail account no problem.

Hi Zasia,

I tried to apply your fix, but I only get as far as settings>mail, contacts, calendars>account name>advanced...

There is no "Deleted Mailbox" option, although there is a "Deleted Messages" field. But in this field, I have only the choice of:

Remove>never
Remove>After one day
Remove>After one week
Remove> After one month

There is no option to change it to "Trash" under "On the Server." What am I missing?

Thanks!

Hi Maggot

I have a 3G iPad. I am currently only using wireless as I haven't researched the 3G plans yet, but if you have only wireless, perhaps your settings are different.

Under advanced, at the top of the screen, there is a heading that says 'mailbox behaviors', with three options under it: 'drafts mailbox' 'sent mailbox' and 'trash mailbox'.

When I chacked the setting for my yahoo account, I noticed that I have fewer options. Among the variations, I still get 'trash mailbox' but no 'sent mailbox'.

Perhaps the settings vary depending on what sort of email account you are using.

I did find out that with my ISP account, it wasn't downloading my emails to my iPad so much as allowing me to view my account online. Like logging directly into your ISP when you are using a public computer. When I hit delete, it is deleting the emails from my ISP server (based on the settings I described in my earlier post). When I turn my regular computer on and open Outlook, all my email downloads to my computer, except what I deleted from the server using iPad. Only as soon as I download to my computer, those emails are no longer accessible on the iPad. I can no longer view emails downloaded to my computer on my iPad as it's no longer on my ISP server. This is likely why you can't just hit delete on the iPad, and why delete from the server does allow you to delete instead of that annoying message telling you you can't. Hope that made sense.

Its annoying I can't view the email on my iPad after downloading to my computer, because I am loving how email displays on the iPad. I might be able to look at changing my computer settings to leave a copy on the server when it downloads my email. I'm sure I've seen that somewhere. Shouldn't be a problem as my iPad can delete from the server.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. If you haven't got the same settings as I have, I'm not sure how to fix it for you. Hopefully some if this info will help you, though.

I'm on a WiFi + 3G, too. And currently I'm only using WiFi, as well.

See this is what I don't have -- there is no Mailbox Behaviors tab in my advanced pane.

I think you're on to something.

Thanks very much for trying, Zasia!

Solved.

Had to delete all my unnecessary emails on my ISP's webmail server. Then, I had to delete the email account on the iPad, reconnect the network and recreate the email account (changing the POP address, too.)

Sounds more difficult than it was, and it's working fabulously. Apparently, some ISPs webmail configurations are more problematic than others.

I was having a similar problem. I could not find some of the things mentioned in this string like "deleted mailboxes". I finally noticed that there was a Mobile Me account listed at the top of the mail settings for accounts under Mail, Contacts, Calendars in General Settings. I am not using MobileMe at this time. I deleted that account. Now my emails delete from the iPad but are still available on my MacBook. This is the arrangement I want for email.

iPad mail won't let me delete or send emails to trash
