Q: copying files window stuck

so i was copying things from an external hard drive to my mac a few days ago and in the middle of a transfer the little rectangular "Copy" window that shows the transfer progress just stopped.
it says

Preparing copy to "Macintosh HD"
(the middle bar is just the blue and white barbers twirling thing which is still moving)
Preparing to copy 39,872 items.

it was stuck like this a while so i just disconnected the external HD but the window was still stuck like that. i tried hitting the x next to the bar to "stop copying" but it doesn't work. there is no other way to stop it so i just minimized it. that was a few days ago and just saw it on my dock still minimized doing the exact same thing. so i thought i'd ask you guys what's up. how do i get rid of this box thats stuck copying files from an HD that is no longer connected?

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

did you reboot ever since ?

when you do, connect the external, launch disk utility and run +verify disk+ sessions on both the external and your startup disk.

    i had to force shut down as the unfinished operation was stopping any normal shut down.
    just ran disk utility and everything is fine

    Hi,

    I'm having this same copy window stuck issue where by the blue progress bar has stopped/beocme stuck halfway through the process.

    Please tell me what I can do.

    My External HD I'm copying data to has been acting up the past week or so where it wouldn't mount. But, it did mount on a day and I managed to recover all my data to another external HD. Thankfully.

    I have run TechTool Pro on the drive to check for any bad sectors after erasing with disk utility. I did note that I wasn't able to earse and zero out the disk via that option, so am wondering what's up with my drive.

    Any ideas?

    I've a Lacie Big Disk Extreme 500GB, Tripple Interface.
