Canon i-Sensys LBP7750Cdn

Problems setting up UFR II for Macbook.
I have a Mac book V 6,1 running MAC OS X 10.6.3.Snow Leopard and have attempted unsuccessfully for two months to install printer drivers for a Canon i-Sensys LBP 7750Cdn printer.
The printer is fine since I managed to install it on Windows XP in 5 mins, which works!
Canon’s support was legendary in their ineffectiveness. I apologise for my verboseness in advance hoping it helps understanding.
I keep getting a “error courred” = -50” message (with the incorrect spelling!) at the top of each page when I try to print with the correctly installed UFR II driver for aforesaid 7750Cdn. Currently it is my understanding that both the:
1) Canon Macintosh PS PPD File v2.85 for Mac OS X (2.85) and
2) Canon UFR II Printer Driver v 2.00 for Macintosh (v2.06)
are necessary. I have tried it also with a single No2 driver too.
I have combed all the way through the ‘Troubleshooting printer issues in Mac OS X’ http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3140
My findings are as follows:
*USB cables fine*
Printing from another simple Mac OS X application (Text Edit) gives the “error courred” = -50” message at the top of the page.
*In the Apple System Profiler* (Applications/Utilities/) location the printer is listed as:
Driver v2.0
URI: usb//Canon/LBBP7750C…. etc.
PPD: Canon LBP7750CC/5460 UFR II (UK)
PPD: File Version v2.0
It does not appear to be creating a Printer error log.
*Changing over driver* to a Generic PostScript Printer (as suggested in TS3140) produced a different header on the printed first page after which the printer churned out pages uselessly:
“% ! PS- Adobe-3.0
%APL DSCEncoding: UTF8
%APL Producer: (Version 10.6.3 (Build 10D5”
*Repairing disk permissions* gave a ‘Users differ on “Library/Printers/install Printers.plist”, should be 0, use is 501’
’Repaired “Library/Printers/Installed Printers p.list” ‘ message
Installed Printers P. list shows a 0kB file size.
After this Error Occurred message was still = -50
*Reset Printer system* ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341) + a delete and reinstall of the drivers did not help the situation, and gave the same error message. _The best I can do is to get a Grainy black and White picture with a Generic PCL Laser Printer Driver. As opposed to the “correct installation” the Generic PCL driver shows the duplexer unit._

In looking at all these items Printer driver No. 1 (above) seems to be at fault since I cannot find the second of the folder/files installs by the driver (Mac UFR II Printer Driver Installation Guide 2-9 Part 3) in:
[System Volume]/Library/Launch Agents/jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist
The second driver No. 2 appears responsible for the first set of folders/files installs correctly listed in the manual as:
Mac>Library/Printers/Canon/UFR2
Folder/files install number 2 (2nd bullet point):
Does not appear to be present n the said:
Mac>Library/LauchAgents/jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.list
Launch agents is instead present in:
Mac>System/LIbrary/LaunchAgents, where there does not appear to be a corresponding file

Folder/files install number 3 (3rd bullet point) of:
[System Volume]/Library/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/CNTD **Z*2.ppd.gz
this should be:
Mac>Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/CNTD **Z*2.ppd.gz
Where I found it located

Canon's useless helpdesk are of the opinion that it is the Mac software that is to blame; if the Mac update were to come with a driver, which it does not appear to, I would have thought everything would be fine.

My two questions are:
Can anyone please help me spot what is going wrong?
Is there a way to install the boasted compatible drivers without having to reinstall my Mac operating system and try again which rather defeats the object?
Is there another suggested means to install the printer for the Mac OS that I should have tried?

For starters, the UFRII v2.06 driver is supported on OS X 10.6. I have been using it for months so what Donald Palmer has stated is purely based on observation and not fact.

Regarding the LBP7750Cdn, this printer only supports UFRII and PCL5c/PCL6. This will mean that you cannot use the Canon PPDs or the Generic Postscript included with OS X as the printer does not support Postscript.

With regards to the Generic PCL driver giving 'grainy' output, this is due to the default print resolution of this driver being 300dpi. Via Printer Features you can increase the resolution to 600dpi which will improve your print quality, however you will still be only able to print in b&w - this Generic PCL driver does not support colour printing.

With regards to the -50 error, when I have seen that code myself or responded to others in this forum that have also had the error, it has typically been a result of the wrong IP protocol being selected for the print queue. This stops the UFRII Backgrounder service from communicating with the printer. Since you are connecting via USB rather than Ethernet, then the selected protocol will not be the issue so there must be some other factor contributing to the error.

Firewalls can be one cause, faulty USB cables can be another. So for starters check System Preferences > Security > Firewall so see if the built-in firewall is enabled and turn it off if it is. I would also suggest you try another USB cable and USB port on your Mac. If you used the same cable with XP, don't assume that it is okay. The Canon driver works differently on the Mac compared to Windows so the cable can be a factor.

With the firewall off and a working USB cable, you should be able to check the operation of the UFRII background service by opening Print & Fax, selecting the 7750, selection Options & Supplies, then the Utility tab then Open Printer Utility. This will open the UFRII Printmonitor utility and should provide you with information about the 7750. Can you reply if this utility will open and give you information about the printer.

Gee what a scolding.

I checked at the Apple site http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669 and it did not list this printer.
I went to the Canon site and found

Operating Systems Compatibility
2000/ Server 2003/ Server 2008/ XP/ Vista
Mac OS X version 10.4.9 -10.5.x ¹

And then found this

Canon UFR II Printer Driver v2.06 for Macintosh
Supported OS:
Power PC: Mac OS X v10.4.9 to v10.6.1
Intel: Mac OS X v10.4.9 to v10.6.1
Version v2.06

Evidently I didn't dig deep enough.

I checked on further and found the 2.10 driver that supports 10.6.3@

http://www.usa.canon.com/opd/controller?act=OPDDisclaimerAct&fcategoryid=2478&mo delid=17873&id=63575&file=/cpr/software/imagerunner/UFRIIv2.10MacOSX.zip

Maybe this will help, I hope this makes up for me being non-factual.
Good Luck,
dp
