Ethernet Not Connected

I'm an American living in South Korea and yesterday my ethernet port gave out. I've got it plugged in right now, but the system preferences say that the ethernet is not plugged in.

I'm on a MacBook Pro, running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8.

It happened all of the sudden! I've got it plugged in at my apartment and it works, but it won't work at my work. I've tried different ethernet cords but for some reason it only works with the one at my apartment.

Any ideas?

I don't think so. I've got internet on my PC at work, and on my XBOX at home. I've tried multiple different ethernet cords both at work and at home and they all don't work.

The odd thing is, in my apartment I've got a cord coming right out of the wall (no plug or anything) so its impossible to switch ethernet cords. I was using a router for a while, with the wall cord plugged into the router and running a seperate cord to my xbox (that worked) and another one to my computer, (doesn
't work). How odd is this?

Thanks for the reply.

Hi mcaverly,

Honestly it's very odd. As the other user stated it sounded like a text book case of a bad Ethernet cable or a bad Ethernet port. But it sounds like the cable works with other devices and the Ethernet port works at another location.

The next step would be to make a new network location or to remove and add the Ethernet connection in the existing profile. I'd vote the new profile option, it's pretty harmless.

If that still doesn't work then the next option I could think of would be to remove the system configuration folder via root and let it rebuild on restart. That process is trickier and you run the risk of it not properly repopulating, however.
