Unable to restore/update iPhone. Error 14

I was about to update my iPhone today when iTunes gave me an error and now I'm stuck in an endless loop with a non-working phone. The update failed and iTunes prompted me to restore the phone. I went ahead with it and after about 5 minutes i receive an error saying that the restore failed (error 14). When I click ok iTunes gives me a message saying that my phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. When I go to restore it the same thing happens! As of right now my iPhone is a very expensive paperweight. Can someone give me some tips on how to get this thing working again?

Apple's troubleshooting guide for this problem: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

As a first step, make sure you are connecting to a USB port directly on the computer, not to a hub, and to a port on the back of the computer if you have ports on both back and front. From that tip, specifically for error 14:

Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one of more of the steps listed below:

1. Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including a different USB port directly on the computer.
2. Put a (powered) USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
3. Try a different USB 30-pin dock connector cable.
4. Eliminate third-party security software conflicts by following iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software.
5. There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your Registry. If your default packet size is set incorrectly it can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance.
6. Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
7. Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

I had the same thing happen, my phone is stuck in a loop and phone is no longer operational. I was updating in itunes when the update process seemed to stall. I chose to restore phone while phone was updating and the phone's been useless ever since. I followed all of the suggested solutions and nothing worked. Finally made an appt @ the local genius bar and was told that the phone could not be fixed and needed to be replaced.

I hope you had better luck than I did - I got no choice but to buy a replacement this afternoon.
