I had the same issue. Connect miniDisplayPort to external monitor and 1 minute to 1 hour later both screens would go blank and the laptop would be locked up. Cap locks key no longer works. Unplugging the miniDisplayPort does work. Have to lean on the power button for several seconds to force reboot.

Here's what I tried with the help of apple support:
    1. Failure occurs with Gigaware and Apple VGA converters.
    2. Seems to happen faster with overhead projector vs. second desktop monitor
    3. Seemed to start happening in only the last month or two. Have had laptop working with monitors/projectors for almost a year.
    4. Ran all of the disk utilities.. verify&repair and verify&repair privileges
    5. Reset the PRAM
    6. Reset the SM? which reset the logic board

None of these things made a difference.

    7. Backed up my OSX version from 10.6.6 to 10.6.3. I have now been running for over a week with no issues. This appears to have solved this issue.

There must be a bug that was introduced in 10.6.6 that affects external monitors. Backing up to 10.6.3 is OK as a temporary workaround, however this has other issues.

    Hey Apple Engineers,

Please get to the bottom of this so that we can update to 10.6.7 without any issues! THANKS!!

Here's another +1 with the same issue.

    My configuration:
Macbook Pro 2.66 GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo
    MacOS X 10.6.6
    External Dell screen

"Purple screen of death" approx every 6-8 hours of useage.

As an aside, if anyone knows how to access the "useful"/"recommended" message in a thread on this discussion board, please let me know. I don't want to browse through all the answers ...

Having the same problem as all of you.
    - turning monitor sleep to "never" did NOT solve the problem
    - updating to 10.6.7 did NOT solve the problem.

I don't understand why do we users have to figure out a way to solve this problem, instead of Apple? Apparently this line of Macbook Pros is faulty. Whenever I go to a service provider they tell me they find nothing wrong. frustrating.
They should provide some special return program for this issue.

im having the same issue - 2 month old mbp 13inch and no external display !

have taken it to the genius bar - they can't replicate the problem, BECAUSE THEY'RE ONLY TESTING WITH APPLE CINEMA DISPLAYS , and no third party displays.

i'm currently on the phone to apple - demanding a replacement / upgrade to a new mbp, will post results.

update - after phone conversation - the moron from apple support - wants me to check the firmware on 3 of the screens i've been using. Then take it into an apple authorised repair centre who has a third party (non apple) display to test on. Unbelievable !

Do you have the problems with a new Macbook Pro with i5 processor? I am asking because I am thinking about getting rid of the problem by selling my MBP and getting a new one instead.

Wow. Happy to find this thread, if not to console me after labouring to find a solution to this problem:

I have been experiencing the following for about five weeks:

    - main screen goes black, external monitor goes black, LCD projector goes black after computer appears to go to sleep.
    - the sleep light remains a steady white rather than pulsate.

    I've performed the following:

    - reset the PRAM
    - reset the SMC
    - backed up and reinstall OS after doing a clean install
    - updated the system using the combo installer for 10.6.7. (I had the 10.6.4. installer that came with my Mac)

I had contacted Apple Support and they advised me to do the first two (i.e., PRAM, SMC). Apparently, I no longer had the free 90-day phone support, so I said I would try to reinstall the OS to see if I experienced the same issues.

It's Monday, and my MacBook Pro JUST experienced the black screen of death.

Oh, I should add that my machine has had several kernal panics upon restart or when the machine has been left on for a while (I don't tend to shut down my Macs). The last kernal panic occurred when my machine had not been connected to an external display leading me to believe that all these forced-restarts corrupted my system.

So, it's another call to Apple and a request for a logic board replacement.

I have the same problem, external LG screen, resolution 1920x1200, MacBook Pro 13".

I just bought my MacBook Pro 13", and I'm connecting it to Sony Bravia.

I have almost the same problem, just my laptop doesn't freeze, only the TV turns pink.

I unplug and re-plug it, and then it fixes itself.

anyone knows when will it be fixed, and whether it is a software or hardware problem?

  • Vicarious Reality Level 1 (0 points)

Well, well. This would indeed appear to be a very widespread problem. Looks like everything has been said, still no solution. I guess all that is left is my +1.

Come on Apple, don't be that guy. Listen to your buyers, fix the problem.

  • issahar Level 1 (0 points)

Apple has release yesterday a software update that seems to fix these problems.

Can someone post whether it fixed it or not?

Hi everyone, I have the new MacBook Pro 13.3" i5 2.3GHz Early 2011 and the Moshi HDMI Adapter.

Until today I was able to use my LG M2362D 23" screen with the adapter just fine.

After Installing today's update and firmwire, I can't connect correctly MBP with the screen.

Either I get a pink screen, no signal, "noise" in the screen, nothing but problems unfortunately.

And I repeat, until today no problems whatsoever. Something in the Update causes the problem.

    Didn't help for me.

    I hate it very much!

It's been almost a year and I struggle to understand why there hasn't been a response from Apple on this? Let alone a fix.

I've tried all the solutions recommended. My last option is to contact Apple Support, but from the previous horror stories I'm reluctant to do so (especially because I'm not living in the UK anymore).

I'm a freelance designer, and I can't afford to not have my laptop with me - so sending it off for repair really has to be the last resort.

Please, just a response. Even if it is "Take it to your local Apple dealer". Enough is enough.

Same issue here. MBP 15" from mid-april 2010 plug to a 23" Asus monitor with the Apple mini-desplay port. Was fine for 6 months, then from no where and so randomly, the black screen of the death. Tried everything that is here on this forum...

Brought it the Apple store, argued 20 min and showing one story on this thread so the Genius would agree to change the motherboard. It was fine for 4 months and since 1 month it is happening again, despite the software updates. I am pretty sure though it is hardware issue as I'm using Win XP on dual boot and it is also doing the same, crash but on the Windows blue screen...

Only solution would be to change the MBP completely and hope for a non faulty one... ****.
