My son downloaded a program called Handbrake which takes the avi files and encodes them to mp4 format that you can open in iMovie. You identify each avi file and set them up in a queue. Then you run it and it deposits them in a pre-defined location.
iMovie did not open the file. I tried PicassoB's solution but the program suggested did not work. I finally ended up using QuickTime Player to convert the AVI file to a usable format. This question is now solved; no points for anyone.
