First things to do with my new iPad?

I just got it and it's been sitting here with me at work... I'm going to play with it tonight when I get home... What are the first 5-10 things you would do with it? Specific apps? setting up email?

I use both gmail and yahoo and was hoping I could synch the mail app to both???

I've been having a lot of problems synching my blackberry to gmail calendar so not sure what to do with a calendar...

Your thoughts?

1. Active it!

2. Enable it to connect to your wireless network if you have one.

3. Got Mobile Me? Active it and sync up your goods. If not, at least set up one e-mail account. I can't answer for gmail, but with Yahoo, it's flawless. Read on one machine, it's marked read on all. Delete in one place, it is deleted in all.

4. Got a few songs in iTunes? Sync at least one up, maybe an entire album or short playlist.

5. Got a movie? Sync up just one movie.

6. Got pictures? Pick a small selection of photos to sync up.

7. Sync all of the above. Now you have a nice selection of various things to play with.

8. Download iBooks. With the free free Winnie the Poo book at least, give a nice example of what can be done with pictures and such.

9. Now that you are loaded up, if you have family tell them to leave you alone for the rest of the night, you are busy. Find a comfy couch or bed, your favorite drink, small snack tray, and call in late or sick tomorrow for work/school.

First thing I did (after activating it, of course) is set up my emails. I have gmail and aol and used to have yahoo but the set up for all were smooth. Then I set up my reconcile checkbook app (the best! I don't have to carry around my old checkbook register around), did my Docs To Go, Then I did my music, pics and movies. Once I got all that, then I concentrated on the more frivolous apps...my faves are the hidden object games. I have the iPhone and have most of the same apps on it, but it's soooooo much nicer on my iPad.

Browse the web, see what sites you can and can't use.

Install/uninstall free apps as you find the one you like.

Sync you contacts (if you can). Put them in all the apps you need them in (many apps don't share information so it needs be duplicated).

I use googlemail, Exchange, yahoo mail. They all 'work'. BEWARE! If you delete an email on your iPad it is GONE ON YOUR SERVER! You aren't just cleaning up your iPad you are losing information. I use Exchange and google calendar. They work ok within the limitations of the calendar iPad app.

I have Yahoo Plus. I have heard different things about iPad and 'free' Yahoo. It may work.

Thanks for the suggestions... I have to head out to run errands and catch some dinner.. To bad I have early meetings tomorrow, but I should be back a bit earlier... I might actually just wait and open it tomorrow... I know sounds silly, but I definitely want to have sometime to truly enjoy and get to know the iPad. I'm trying to figure out if using "mail" is best or just saving shortcuts or what ever the "term" is for gmail or yahoo is just as good etc...? I have a blackberry for work and am unsure if I want this iPad to at all be connected to work etc...

My major problem is the blackberry does not synch to gmail calendar at all so setting up a calendar sort of ***** unless I have one for work and one for normal life which unfortunately is quite blurred together...

Maybe I'll have IT install citrix and even let them synch my work calendar, contacts, and email to the system??? - - - your thoughts?

What would adding another layer (citrix) gain you?

There doesn't seem to have 'shortcuts/links' in iPad. And there is only one email app that I know of. It takes 5 taps to traverse from one account to another.

Calendar shows all the events on one calendar (haven't found a way to show only events from one calendar - but haven't looked too far - either way its non-intuitive if I can't find it in 3 mins). So, the blurr will be accommodated in the calendar.

There should be an icon with today's date on it, that the calendar. If not, slide the home screen to the left. This should bring up a search window. Type in calendar and see if it finds it.

If your a movie watcher, Nexflixs is great on the iPad. And it cheap (!!!) for what you get.

When you sync to iTunes from your desktop computer. Make sure you use the usb cable that comes with the iPad. If you don't you can run into problems syncing or using the iPad. Lastly, you can use and keep the iPad plugged into the charger with no problems.

My calendars (two types) are through yahoo. Only one of them shows in iPad. There is no facility to have it show the two of them like in iPhone. I hate mobile me other than it's synching feature. Slow and clunky and minimal features. I've had my yahoo account for almost fifteen years so not willing to give it up. Too much historical records and business emails in it.

This lack of flexibility combined with the BS problems I have with the app store and the seemingly systemic problem iPad has holding a wifi connection are all making me wish I just hadn't bothered in the first place. I should have waited a couple years for all the bug fixes. I'm having so many problems it feels like I was teleported back to the introduction of Windows98.

Oddly enough, everything works PERFECTLY except the app store on my iPhone. It was that perfection that made me foolishly believe iPad would work just as well
