Phantom Unwanted Extra MIDI note existis, yet does NOT exist in session...

Okay, I am completely dumbfounded. I have a 2 MIDI snare tracks: both using GarageBand's "Drum Kits." Now for some reason, in exactly one particular spot, I can hear an extra snare hit [at a very high velocity]. I have double checked my MIDI tracks and THEN SOME:

1. Checked to see if there was an extra MIDI note in both these tracks (via Piano Roll window) - NO.
2. Checked to see if there was a hidden note under other notes - NO.
3. Created a brand new track and copied (and replaced in a separate instance) the MIDI notes over, and STILL getting that phantom snare hit.
4. Checked my notation, score, event list, etc, and ALL windows show NO EXTRA note, yet I still hear this extra snare hit.
5. There is no delay nor any other plug-in on any of the 2 tracks.

This problem occurs on these 2 snare tracks ONLY. I thought it might be the "Drum Kits" insert, but I have 3 other tracks using the same insert and they don't have this extra ghost note.

ANYONE KNOW WHETHER THERE IS A LOGICAL EXPLANATION, OR WHETHER I AM GOING INSANE...?!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Logic 9.1.1.

I tried what you suggested, but it didn't help. The only option I had was to bounce my MIDI track into a WAV file/track, and then physically cut out/delete the extra hit within the WAV file.

But it's just odd 'cause I just cant seem to understand how that hit occurred when there was no MIDI not present, nor was there any kind of delay, etc.

The phantom SN hit can be played from a "third" track which is set to that Instrument by chance - like kick track etc. Try to mute all midi tracks in the arrange to check if the phantom SN hit stops to play. If yes, start to un-mute the tracks one by one to find out where is that hidden SN hit.

If you can't find it, you could always upload the project file and let us take a look at it.

It's coming from somewhere, MIDI data is not randomly generated unless you've made something to randomly generate it 🙂

I doubt it's some obscure bug, more likely it's something you've overlooked. Be happy to take a look at it if you want to work out what's going on with it...

It was only 2 tracks that had the phantom MIDI note - no problem with any of my other tracks. I def checked to see if anything was triggering it, but nope. Anyway, will check the score window as Scorpii has suggested, but in a bit. Right now facing a compatibility problem with my Logic's 3rd party plug-ins and Snow Leopard, and the fact that Logic won't start up.

Thanks to all for your replies - really do appreciate them!

I have exactly the same phantom note problem that defmuse has. I made a copy of the project and deleted all regions (MIDI and audio) and could still hear the piano part. I, too, was dumbfounded (and frightened, as I have used Logic since 2.5).

I opened the score as Scorpii suggested, and, indeed the part is there. How could it be that there are notes being played that are not in the arrange window? And how do I stop them from playing (besides deleting the Score)? I know very little about the score.

What I'm doing is deleting some Bb notes from my piano part in the Piano Roll view, but this does not seem to delete them from the score. What's the best way to get the score in sync?

Notes are either in the region, or they are not.

If they are in the region, most likely they were recorded when you recorded the region - you're MIDI controller or something probably spat them out for some reason.

Remember that you can have different views on a region, and the views can filter data out - the best thing to do is look at the region in the event list and make sure the filters are all off. Then you can see the exact MIDI data the region contains.
