Cannot set OpenOffice as default application for anything

I want CSV files to open in OpenOffice, rather than MS Excel or Numbers (both of which butcher them). However, everytime I try and change this, it reverts back to whatever the previous default was, for example:

Click on CSV file in Finder
Command + i
Chose OpenOffice.org in "Open With" drop-down
Click "Change All..."

I then get a warning message, at which point I click "Continue" and immediately, the drop-down selection reverts back to MS Excel. If I select TextEdit as the default app, it works fine. If I then try and change to OpenOffice.org, after pressing "Continue" as above, it reverts back to TextEdit.

This seems to point to a problem with OS X accepting OpenOffice as a default app for some reason, doesn't it? Does anyone have a fix or workaround for this?
