Can't find Google Server

With our two Macbooks, we seem to be shut out of anything Google, including our gmail account. Fortunately, Apple Mail gets us our mail. Actually, not all Google, as Google Maps, Google Translate work.
Signing on to gmail or Google search, we get the message:
Safari can’t open the page “ http://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox” because it can’t find the server “mail.google.com”.
The same happens in Firefox.
Everything else works, ie I can search in Yahoo! (that is how I found this site).
Is it a plot to have us switch to Chrome?
The one new thing is we changed to a wireless internet connection with a "Rogers Rocket Hub". We used to be with the Hughes satellite.
Our two Macbooks have different OS's and Safari's. This laptop is only 1 year old, with 10.5.7 and Safari 3.2.3. Will upgrading do it?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...

This laptop is only 1 year old, with 10.5.7 and Safari 3.2.3. Will upgrading do it?

You need to update to Leopard 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.5. (Minimum requirements noted here) http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

Go to your Apple Menu/Software Updates.

When the updates are installed repair disk permissions.

Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility.

Restart your Mac.

If upgrading your system software doesn't help, then it could be the third party hardware, "Rogers Rocket Hug". Very important to keep your Mac OS X up to date for security and privacy, read here:

Did the upgrades to OS 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.5.
and did the disk repair procedures.
Didn't make any difference. Same message:
Safari can’t open the page “ http://mail.google.com/mail/#inbox” because it can’t find the server “mail.google.com”.
Still no access to gmail or google regular search.
Whaaa???
Re the Rogers Rocket Hub. I recall that it worked (found gmail, etc.) at first, then after a couple days, got unreliable, and now doesn't work at all.
The Rocket Hub is a larger version of the internet stick, and works on the Rogers cel phone G3 network.
Any ideas our there?

Another idea....

From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Security tab. Click "Show Cookies" Delete all Google related cookies and click Done. Now click the Autofill tab. Click the Edit button next to Other Forms. Delete .google.com.

Relaunch Safari and see if that made a difference.

If not, launch Mac Mail then from that Menu Bar click Mailbox/Rebuild. This can take a few minutes.

Now try Google.
