HP Photosmart C4180: scanner reported an error

Scanner has operated well until recently. Now I do get a message: "Scanner reported an error. Image Capture encountered unknown error. Image could not be saved. Please try again." Want to know wether it is a hardware failure or has something to do with software/driver issue.
Any suggestion is very welcome to help me out.

imac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.7)

i'm having the same issue-- scanner worked perfectly as recently as last week-- tonight, i'm getting the same error message as you...

hopefully you figured this out by now, but i just had that same error and solved it. check the destination folder that you are scanning to. mine was set to scan to a folder that didnt exist anymore. i changed it to save to the desktop and everything worked fine!

Pumpkin Patch nailed!
This problem started today with my HP All in One Photosmart 2610.
Thanks for posting this, so simple, but I would never figure this one out, because I have the Picture folder where my scans go, never changed.
I tried the advice to save to the desktop, which I hate, but it works!
And now it goes to my Pictures too.
I remember there was recently a printer update.
The update must have unlinked or messed up the destination address!

I just had this same problem happen to me - scanning was fine until just recently I got the same error. As reported, I changed the destination folder to Desktop and it worked. Nuts...
