iPhone 3GS recognized in iTunes but not by Picasa - Windows XP

I have an iPhone 3GS that I sync at home on my iMac. I use the camera a LOT for work - I do fieldwork and having gps data with images is essential.

Up until a few weeks ago I have been able to plug in my phone at work on a Windows XP machine and import photos with Picasa. Now when I go to import nothing is listed in the "Import from" dropdown menu. The phone doesn't show up as a camera device in My Computer either. ODDLY... it is recognized by iTunes - although I don't use iTunes with my phone at work (I sync my music on my home computer so the music titles are grayed out on my work computer), I launched it just to see if my phone was being recognized in some way on my work Windows XP machine. It is.

If iTunes finds the device, why not other software?!!

I'm using Picasa 3.6.0 (I just checked, it's up to date for this PC), iTunes 9.1.1.12, and iPhone OS 3.1.3

I have seen a few complaints about the camera roll and bugs that some face.
The most common is if you have ever saved an image from the web/email that sometimes that image messes up the camera roll. While the iPhone can still show the photos, when it comes to syncing, it messes the process.

And since the iPhone only reports that it is a camera when there are photos, it could be some messed up image (normally one saved from web or email) has caused it not to report it is a camera.

So suggestion is if you have saved any images to the camera roll other than by taking a picture with the camera, try removing those pictures (I know *****, but you can at least email them to yourself first before removing).

I do save images from web or email occasionally... I looked at my last Picasa import (and I've imported over 1500 images from iPhone to Picasa before this problem surfaced) and deleted the files saved since that import (there were two of them). disconnected the phone, reconnected the phone, launched Picasa... unfortunately, no. Still doesn't show up in the "Import from" menu or My Computer but is recognized as an iTunes device.

First just to be clear, you don't have 1500+ photos in your camera roll do you?

But as for iTunes seeing it and computer not seeing it as camera (you have checked My Computer to ensure it is not listed as Camera/Scanner and Picasa just isn't picking it up right), it could be the cable. Yes iTunes sees it, but each pin on the bottom of the phone does certain things. Some pins are for charging, some are for other devices (docks), some are for iTunes syncing, and some for saying hey I am a camera. Could be your cable. If you have another cable, try that. Also ensure your dock at the bottom of the phone is clear of any dirt/lint that could block a connection to a pin.
