Blue Screen of Death & disk0s2: I/O error

Hi

My Mac just slowed down suddenly yesterday, then when I tried to reboot, it went to grey screen Apple logo & spinning ball for ages, then stalled on blue screen.

I tried the following:

1. Ran Applejack 3 times on auto - said "errors repaired" or "no errors"
2. Restarted with Leopard Install disk & repaired disk with Disk Utilty - said "no errors"
3. Reset the SMC
4. Tried to reset PRAM, but Mac just booted to blue screen
5. Deleted Preference Panes in Library like Application Enhancer.
6. Booted in verbose mode to check for error messages
7. Tried to re-install Leopard with "Install & archive" but install quit after 30 minutes, saying hard drive may have errors.
8. Tried to re-boot from install disk, but wouldn't reboot.

In verbose mode, I noted some of the messages:

disk0s2: I/O error
ParallelsConnectUSB... Control service not started
ALF ALERT sockwall cntl_updaterules_ctlenqueuedata rts err 55

During the last Applejack, I got this message:
Incorrect block count for file kdc.log (It should be 50 instead of 26)

Some of the other forum threads I've read suggest that the hard drive is bust, but I was able to search for programs & go anywhere in the directories in single user mode. I was even able to delete Application Enhancer prefPane. Surely, I wouldnt be able to do that if the hard disk was bust?

Any advice?

Hi, no the disk isn't partitioned. However, the first blue screen happened after I did an Applejack auto while my external hard drive was still connected, which threw up a couple of error messages, can't remember them now.

Parallels isn't installed, although it was installed on a previous OS years ago, 10.4 I think. I use Cross Over instead.

I have now borrowed another Mac to try a diagnostic with Techtool Pro 5. Trouble is, the Mac is brand new with Snow Leopard, so I've got to go buy a Firewire 400/800 adaptor. Wonder if Techtool Pro 5 is backwards compatible with Leopard. I'll find out later today, I guess.

Ok, using another Mac linked by Firewire, I was able to see my Mac file structures clearly. I could see the newly created Leopard OS and my old archived Leopard OS.

I tried running Tooltech Pro Surface Scan & Volume Structures. Surface scan ran for 30 mins then just stopped & my MacBook Pro fans went into hyperdrive, which is what they have done every time the Mac bluescreens. The bottom of the Mac is scorching hot. Then, the Mac Firewire link quit without warning.

What now? Any ideas?

If you have not already done so, disconnect all devices from your MBP.
Run Apple's Hardware Test from the System DVD #1 *that originally came w/your MBP.* Read the DVD label to find out which key to boot up from to run the Test.

"4. Tried to reset PRAM, but Mac just booted to blue screen"

Not a good sign. 😟

"7. Tried to re-install Leopard with "Install & archive" but install quit after 30 minutes, saying *hard drive may have errors."*

Since you are going to attempt to use Techtool Pro, _you must use the correct version that is compatible w/your current OS to avoid damaging your system any further._
Visit TechTool Pro website.

Thank Baby Boomer

Unfortunately I can't find the original disk (10.4), so I tried rebooting with my Leopard install disk & pressing D, but I just get the grey Apple screen & spinning hourglass. I've searched online for the right disc image for my MBP, found it eventually & made a CD of the disc image, but when I reboot + D, the CD does exactly the same routine as the Leopard install disk.

I went to the TTP website, but v4.6.2, the version prior to v5, cannot run on Snow Leopard. Are you suggesting that I re-install Leopard onto the second machine in order to run TTP 4.6.2?

I'm out of Applecare & it'll cost 100 bucks for a technician just to examine the machine, which he could well say will cost several hundred to repair.

Running out of options, aside from totally re-formatting the hard drive.

cannot run on Snow Leopard.

If you are running Snow Leopard, you need to correct your system information as it currently shows you are running Leopard.

Apple's Hardware Test is not found on install discs. Just the discs that came with your computer - system discs.

I can't tell if you are experiencing hardware or software issues or possibly both.
Part of your original post indicates possible directory issues. DiskWarrior will clear that right up.
If you live near an Apple Store, they can run a few diagnostic tests to let you know what the problem is for free.

For a small handling fee, you can get system discs directly from Apple. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
Since you live in the UK, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number -
