MacBook Pro

I have been having some problems with my SuperDrive lately. Whenever I try to burn DVD+R DL Discs, I get a series of error messages. (I am using the latest build of Toast 10 Titanium)

Whenever I start to burn the disc, I get an error message saying:
"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x09
TRACK FOLLOWING ERROR"

Immediately after clicking "OK" on the error, I get another message saying:
"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x0C
WRITE ERROR"

Toast then says that it's writing Lead-Out, then gives me an error message saying the exact same thing as the first one, then gives me a new error message that states:
"Lead-in or Lead-out failed to be written."

I burned a regular DVD in iDVD and it seemed to work fine, but then tried the exact same settings again, only writing on a DL and it gave me the same errors. I have tried burning with Memorex DVD+R DLs and Sony DVD+R DLs. Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Hi Cflame,

Problems burning DL discs when regular ones will work fine usually come down to either a slightly dirty lens or poor media compatibility.

Try a lens cleaning disc and some Verbatim or Maxell discs.

Memorex discs, in particular, can be pretty questionable in MBP drives (and many PC drives, too, for that matter) , and with Sony these days it depends a lot on which particular factory the discs have come out of.

My own experience with DL discs is that Verbatim-R DL are generally the most reliable in these drives.

I tried to use a Memorex OptiDisc lens cleaning disc, but my drive wouldn't even read it. Then, I tried using a Phillips CD/DVD lens cleaner and it read and everything. After the cleaning process was done, I tried to burn one of the Sony DVDs again, since I've read that Memorex are not that reliable in my particular drive. Now, I am only getting one error anytime I burn ANY disc, be it a CD, single-layer DVD, or DVD double layers. The error message states:
"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03"

Should I maybe have the people at the Genius Bar look at it? I have AppleCare.

Hi Cflame,

It certainly sounds as if a dirty lens coupled with problem media was probably the issue. It is worth noting that if you have Applecare apple will almost certainly simply replace a drive with a dirty lens like this, so if it occurs again while you are still under your Applecare contract you might want to simply take it in.
