Q: Late 2006 iMac, Lines, Kernel Panic, Freeze, Reboot, Restart, Serial W8 ?

Hello,

Let me start by explaining the method I am initially going to adopt in my search for answers;

•All of the keywords and more that would not fit in the title space, relate to my problem.
•I think the *iMac Serial* holds the key to mine and possibly a lot of other peoples search for answers.
•My second post will explain what I know about the Serial and the information it provides.
•I have a strong feeling that a lot of people who have the same or similar problems to me will have a Serial that begins with at least W8.
•I believe that a lot of affected machines will of been produced between 2006 & 2008, yet not confined to that window in time.
•So, to round up, I am looking for people who have had/are having the same/similar problems to the ones listed below.

•Small graphical glitches; Thin lines in random areas on the desktop, growing in number and intensity over time.
•Graphical glitches on, in and around Finder windows. Again, growing in number and intensity over time.
•Horizontal lines across entire screen. Again, growing in number and intensity over time.
•The odd Software Crash/System Freeze. (Which does not happen very often on the iMac we've grown to love)
•More frequent Software Crashes/System Freeze's. (Maybe it's all that freeware and plugins I've been playing with)
•Kernel Panic's, never had one before... it was a new one on me.
•Frequent Kernel Panics.
•System Freeze, recovering after being put to sleep and then woken.
•System Freeze, unrecoverable. Hard reset required.
•Exactly the same behavior after a full reinstall of OSX.
•Exactly the same behavior after wiping system drive with zero's, then a full reinstall of OSX.
•Exactly the same behavior after wiping system drive with zero's, then a full reinstall with a previous version of OSX.
•System Freeze requiring hard reset on nearly every occasion Time Machine was accessed.
•Shut iMac down completely, never to respond to Power Button being pressed again, even after trying to reset the SMC.

The above is a simplified list of key events on a relatively short journey from Perfect Machine to, 'will not power up'.

If you or anyone you know has gone through anything similar, I would love you to join this topic.

Yours,
GaBeech

The point you seem to want to avoid is that Apple is not obligated to perform repairs for free beyond the warranty period you purchased for it. If you believe that there are compelling reasons that it should be, like it or not, it is up to you to make a compelling case for that.

I've tried to point out ways you might be able to do that, & ways that won't. There isn't anything else I can do for you.

Ok R C-R, I don't have to pay for mistakes that Apple made!

You can put you fingers in your ears, close you eyes and pass us over like we are insane.
And saying how we should investigate, test it, talk to Apple etc. to get this issue solve that isn't an issue you're saying.

There is one thing you can do: Take me others seriously! Where are not hoping that this will happen to our iMacs. But did so what is Apple going to do about it?

I don't want extended warranty, I want it solved.

    Examples:
Time Capsule & iPhone: Apple wasn't "obligated" to fix the problem. But they did it because it was getting warm under their feet. And Apple were replacing Time Capsules and gave free bumper/cases for the iPhone 4.

    Why:
    - If many say it a worse product then many won't buy;
    - When everybody knows how Apple will be responding to problems. Just blinking it away nothing happens. Steve Jobs: “Just avoid holding it in that way.”
Every stood up saying it is an issue, solve it.

I hope we are getting some media attention. Because I'm not happy anymore!

    RC-R,

Pardon me for butting in on this party. The issue isn’t whether or not Apple should be obligated for repairs beyond the warranty period, it’s whether or not a design flaw is responsible for an inordinate number of failures in 2-4 year-old iMacs.

To paraphrase your earlier question: how many iMacs need to show graphical failure symptoms before Apple owns up to a design flaw? 1,000; 10,000; 100,000?

Sorry, that’s really the crux of the problem. So, please, stop chanting this dead horse warranty mantra.

Unfortunately, there’s really no practical way for us users to find the number of Macs exhibiting these symptoms. We simply don’t have access to the data. This is something Apple has to do, and should be doing – perhaps they are, and perhaps one day we’ll see a resolution similar to the recent one with Time Capsules. Time will tell.

In the meantime, there are a LOT of users who have posted these symptoms on a wide variety of Mac forums – here and elsewhere. Whether the number is statistically relevant is hard to say, but in my view the number who have posted here is striking.

You can say these forums are for those with problems, and therefore dismiss the issue no matter how many post. To me, that’s a cop-out.

It isn't that I don't take the issue seriously. It is that you can't simply guess about how many Macs are affected or why & expect much to come of it.

Serious allegations require serious proof. Guesses or demands won't change that, no matter how forcefully they are expressed.

As promissed on the different forum:
    Serial start with: CK724
Problems: Hanging, slow, dead pixel, weird lines in Finder.
Apple should solve this issue by replacing the parts or the iMac.

You going to figure that out when people start replying over here. With same buildup as my previous post.

What I have figured out is iMacs are more popular than ever (easily verified from quarterly reports). With that in mind, free out-of-warrany repairs or replacements of older ones -- which no matter how you say it is what you are demanding -- is going to take a very large number of people with credible arguments for why that should be done to convince Apple to do it.

So far, I have seen no signs of that. It all basically reduces to "some iMacs of this vintage have died in approximately the same way, so it must be a sign of a design or manufacturing defect." There has been no attempt to compare how many have died vs. how many have not, & like it or not, that is a crucial factor in making a strong case. You can shoot the messenger all you want but that won't make it go away. Sooner or later you will have to deal with that or just give up.

Dont worry, I am dealing with it just fine - I am building my own hackintosh. something tells me it will last at least 5 years. Worst case- I'll replace the defective part.

I was thinking of that too! If Apple can't build a good working machine I do it my self (build a DIY Mac).

I've been having the same problem.
It is of concern to me. I have a few apple computers and a replacement cycle for them.
This puts me off from buying the 27" with the best configuration. I usually move them down my family in usefulness and eventually give them away. This computer is good except this is very annoying and makes work hard. It was top of the line when I got it.

I'd settle for some kind of support. It's wasteful to trash a good computer because a part is bad.
    I'll pay a reasonable fee.

I started getting the wheel a few months ago. My serial is QP7450. I thought maybe it was my 40g music library, or huge number of photos in iPhoto and Aperture. I never got the line artifacts or kernel panic, but I did experience the audio continuing while the picture was frozen on a Youtube video.

I'm in the process of trying the 10.6.4 combo update. I only recently installed 10.6 as an attempt to cure the repeated and random delays. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

thanks to Quid for posting the reference.

Maybe for you it is. How much free space is there on your hard drive?

    Serial Number: W8704
    Problems:
    - Serious overheating problems, constant extra cooling required
    - lost hard drive for overheating
    - dead pixels
    - horizontal lines and weired artefacts show up even with low temperatures (CPU 40C, GPU 46C, GPU Diode 52C)
    - power supply ventilation was inproper, to much isolation foam taping the ventilation holes of the compartment so power supply reached up to 90C (now it's never higher than 56C

    Detection:
Power supply problem detected a little bit after one year. First I did some extra cooling afterwards as Apple said it wasn't responsible I opened up the case and detected the desaster
Strange pixels and artefacts showed up a little bit later, about one and a half year after I bought the late 2006 iMac 24'' in 2007.
My machine is still alive but it's not really stable. The dead pixels and the artefacts are getting worse. If I stop cooling down the machine stops working: spinning beach ball of death.

I reported all this here several month ago. The machine is not repairable from what I can tell. Apple has to offer new macs like with the G5 desaster some years ago...

Constant problems need clear responses! Thousands out here suffered because of Apple supplied errors!
