Launch Activity Monitor (it's in your Applications/ Utilities folder) and watch it. Is anything taking over the CPU during these pauses?

    hi terence,
i'm a fren of Aibak. i've try to check the activity monitor for him before, and there isn't anything special going around during the pause. nothing at the cpu, ram, data or even network.

i called for help and had a moment to collect my thoughts.

if you're still in safe mode, reboot normally, then check if you have read & write permissions for your iTunes music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so

you may also give everyone read & write access. if this doesn't help, try the same on your iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder).

    any improvement ?

How much RAM do you have?

If you have a lot of Smart PlayLists then make sure live update is off.

here are some more troubleshooting steps for you to try:

    (a) check the last post in this thread: http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2068193&start=0&tstart=29.

Here's an update. I removed the apple remote from the room, and for the moment... well, knock wood... iTunes is not pausing, either is Quicktime...

    (b) you might want to temporarily switch keyboards. as bizarre as it sounds, you might have one with a flaky "shift" or "F" key.

    (c) try turning airport off temporarily to see if that has any effect.

    (d) if none of the above helps, open the console app in applications > utilities and look for messages at the time the pausing happens. copy & paste the console message into your next post.

i tried to do the read & write permissions to everyone and even the admin. still the same pausing happens. I tried to use external keyboard also, still the same. I tried to open the console app and look for the message at the time pausing happens, but no message appears. Even with the airport off, still the same problem.

okay, but did you also *apply to enclosed items* ?

also, is there an *Apple remote* control in the same room as the computer hosting iTunes per the thread i linked ?

additionally, how much RAM is installed on your Mac and did you try to turn off +live update+ for your smart playlists as MJ suggested above ?

last but not least, give launching iTunes in _*Safe Mode*_ a try. same problem when you do ?

Interesting post. I too am having this problem on my brand new 15" MacBook Pro, 2.66, i7 4gig ram. I get the same hesitations on playing podcasts (audio) and videos. I did spend an hour on the phone with Apple support and they had be go through numerous steps, including doing a complete reinstall of the operating system. They suggested that if the reinstall did not work, to bring the Mac in for service since it could be related to the video card.

As with Aibak, I notice that the scrubbing window does still advance during the silence of a podcast or the freezing of a video. During that pause, the mouse or trackpad can be non respondent to input. After the freeze (or pause), the podcast or video will start playing from the advanced position as shown in the scrubber. FYI, the videos are purchased from Apple via iTunes and the podcasts are obtained via iTunes. Also, playing Apple radio does not cause any pauses. It appears to only happen with stored media such as podcasts (audio) and video. I have not experimented with playing stored music.

The problem is random and frequency of pauses will vary. A movie can be played at one time with only a single pause occurring during the whole playback. But the same movie can be played again at another time and it may experience multiple freezes during playback. The pause will last anywhere from a few secs to 15 sec or so.

If I find anything new, I will post. In the meantime, it would be great to find a solution without the need to bring my Mac in for repairs.

Update: Ran another test using a different video player, NicePlayer, on an avi file. While this normally runs without a problem, I just experienced a pausing problem with this player as well. During the pause the spinning wait cursor appeared.

When i launch my itunes in safe mode, i cant hear the sound. its really a big trouble now. i really wanna solve this problem asap. tq

Are you running any anti-virus software in the back ground?

    hi,

BDAqua thinks it might have something to do with the version of QuickTime you have installed.

are you using the default QuickTimeX, or QT7 ?

    Hi JGG,

For myself, I have QT Version 10.0 (113). Which I am assuming is the default since it was automatically.

    Thanks
