White screen, nothing runs

The computer froze in browsing mode and was turned off. On turning on, just a white screen appears, the fan runs and nothing else, no login page, nothing. Have inserted install disc and can hear it running but still nothing.
Any thoughts please.

Try a safeboot into safemode:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455

If this does not work try resetting both PRAM and SMC:

Reset PRAM:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379

Reset SMC:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

If these do not help then try booting with the install DVD again, with the following:

1. Insert the DVD into the Mac while it's powered on.

2. Shutdown the Mac.

3. Power-on the Mac and immediately press and hold the "C-key" until you get to the Installation Select Language screen. Select your language then continue.

4. The next screen is the Welcome screen, from there go to the top toolbar and select Utilities/Disk Utilities.

5. From DU, select your drive from the left and First Aid from the right, should be selected by default.

6. From the First Aid window press to run "Repair Disk". If "Repair Disk" returns with errors then run again until it reports no errors found.

7. From the First Aid window press to run "Repair Disk Permissions".

Once these steps are complete try a normal reboot.

Thanks for you help, time and effort people. Have tried all your suggestions. So far, the only thing that worked was holding the C button on restart, a file motif with question mark appears, then inserting disc (This does not work if I restart with the disc already in). I can get as far as Disc Utilities but repair brings up red message, "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit" and "1 volume could not be repaired because of an error". I can also get into the terminal if that is any help.
Computer is only 3 yrs old and is the second one that has done this. The first one was not repairable for less than a new one. Trusting there is still something more could be done.
Thank you

Most likely your disk is shot. You could purchase Disk Warrior as suggested by Lyssa to possibly fix the problem and DW may allow you to salvage your data. If you already have backups of your data I recommend performing a format (You will loose all data) then a fresh install of OSX.

Now keep in mind that DU's "Repair Disk" found an error and could not fix the error. So there is a good possibility that once you perform the fresh install you will have problems again because the disk error still exist.

My recommendations stand with Lyssa, but you need to be ready to replace the drive.

Thank you so much iyacyas and Lyssa. Yes, the hard drive is recognised by disc utility but not by install. It is my daughters computer and she did not have too much on it so has accepted loss of data. Have not been in this area before. DU has the permissions buttons grey but repair and verify are live although produce the error statement given above with drop down tab - First Aid Failed, Disc Utility stopped repairing "disc1s2" because the following error was encountered, The underlying task reported failure on exit. When you say format the hard drive, do you mean clicking the 'erase' button? Under erase, the 'Erase Free Space' is grey but the 'Erase' button is live. The disc is not currently partitioned. Would it be possible to partition and use restore or if not to use restore to copy the install disc to the hard drive. Sorry for my lack of knowledge in these areas.

Here's what you need to do in order to erase the drive:

*Click the drive's icon in the left-hand pane (this is the one with manufacturer name & capacity).
*Click the Erase tab.
*Set *Volume Format* as +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+
*Set Name as +Macintosh HD+
*Click the Erase button.

Once this finishes (shouldn't take long) try Installing OS X again.

That's a communication error with the drive.

The most likely culprits are:

1) dying hard drive
2) broken cable connecting hard drive to logicboard
3) damaged logicboard

I would check for a warranty on the hard drive and get it replaced if at all possible. You'd want to remove the hard drive and contact the manufacturer of the drive.
You can also try removing & reinstalling the drive to see if that helps.
If the above fails, you may even want to bring the computer to an Apple store for diagnostics.

Thank you again for your time and effort. Removed and replaced hard drive. Still the same, disc repair brings up: Catalog file entry not found for extent, Volume check failed.
Guess it is the Apple repair shop then but will have to wait for spare cash. The computer is 3 years old so out of warranties. The last Macbook did the same, it turned out to be the logicboard and was not economically repairable. So sad.
Will have to dig the old iMac out of the loft for her.

Was just about to send the above and tried Erase again and did not get an error message, so presume it has worked. Install is still not recognising the HD though so how do I re-install if it is possible?

Hmm, that makes me wonder if the drive is formatted correctly. In the Disk Utility window, select the hard drive icon (top-most icon in the left-hand pane), then look in the lower-left corner for *Partition Scheme*. It should say "GUID" or "Apple Partition Map." Which do you see listed?

I'm heading off to work, but one more question--are you using a disc from another Mac, or a retail copy of OS X?

I'll check this thread once I'm home tonight.

Bless you for your continued support, I trust you can feel waves of gratitude headed towards you.

Under Disc Utility, First Aid, the hard drive is now only showing up as 74.5 GB Hitachi HTS541... but not the as secondary "disc 1s2". Could this be because it is now erased? All the verify and repair buttons are now grey.

Partition scheme: unformatted.

The install disc I am using is the Mac OS X one that came with the computer.

Loving you for your passion to help.
