Automatic software update OS 10.6.3

I installed an automatic update yesterday and since then, after an long idle time of a couple of hours, when re-awakened, the computer is unstable, makes a stuttering noise, when I click on any item it won't stay open--in short, I now need to unplug to shut down and on restart things are fine. I can't shut down normally because I can't sign the administrator pane because of the stuttering. Any ideas what's going on and how to resolve? Thanks.

Don't unplug. If the key commands for shutdown and restart don't work, hold the power button down until the Mac shuts off.

You may be able to repair this with The 10.6.3 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
