How do you set up an O2 account from the iPad?

I received the iPad yesterday (I know, lucky me) along with an O2 SIM card. I put the card in and a dialog popped up saying it would connect to the network. it now shows the 'O2 - UK' logo and a signal strength in the top-left corner but what happens next? No magical configuration screen has popped up and I can't see anything obviously to click (tap) on to arrange a contract.

Am I missing some magic?

Ok, ignore me - I was missing some magic!

Hi,

I had the same problem. I think it has happened because we had our iPads before O2 were ready for us!

My solution as follows:

Connect to PC with iTunes running. Click to check for updates. Hopefully you will be asked if you want to update the cellular settings. You say yes. After the sync, you should now have a new option to select under Cellular Data in Settings. Click on Account and it should be easy from there. This one drove me crackers all day yesterday so I'm glad to have solved it.

Hope that helps for you as well.

Connect to PC. When the iPad is recognized by iTunes select it on the lefthand column. Under the left-right list of menus for sync options - info, apps etc.

Beneath that should be a couple of large buttons, the topmost of which checks for software updates. Click that. If it tells you there is an update for your cellular settings you should click to accept. After that sync is complete go to settings on the iPad and select Cellular Data. That should give you an Account option on the right-hand pane. Things Gould be easy from there - choose a plan and enter payment/account details.

I had to sync the uPas for a second time with iTunes before I got the chance to update...

Hope that helps.

This confused me too.

When I initially connected to itunes I had some message about configuring 3G, but hadn't inserted the SIM at that point so disconnected and reconnected after inserting the SIM.

It then said there are new settings for your carrier or similar (message familiar to me from iPhone) and updated these in a few secs.

I still couldn't fathom how to set up the account, and O2's site was useless.

I then spotted in iPad Settings a 'Cellular Data' tab which I hadn't noticed before and using that was able to configure the 3G connection quite quickly.

That is the correct way to do but you can't do it at Apple Store if you don't bring your own computer there. The problem is all Kiosk Mac in Apple Store running iTunes in Activation-only mode so you can't update that setting with iTunes.

I was at Frankfurt yesterday. The staff at Apple Store assisted me to sign an improper contract with Vodafone because he didn't know the process. He took me to a web page (via Wifi) then let me enter an information. The correct way is by supplying a correct APN setting. Then open Safari (via 3G). Later you will be directed to the correct web page that let you enter sign the contract. I find out this later when I go back to home and then sync the iPad with my computer.

I think this is also unexpected for Apple Store Staff but hey you can update iPad firmware to include all require Carrier settings before shipping to the store. Then there is no issue with this.
