Using external speaker/i pod dock

Hi, I have an i pod nano 5th generation and I can't seem to get it to work properly with my external speaker. When I connect it, it only has sound coming out of it's internal speaker. With the dock I have you have to connect it via the USB connector not the headphone jack. Is there a setting that I'm missing to correct this or does it only work with speakers using the headphone jack.

What kind of external speaker do you have? If it is an iHome then when you connect your iPod to it, there will be a button with an iPod on it that you have to click to enable the external speakers to play the iPod's music. If you do not have an iHome, try looking for the same sort of thing but I cannot say that it will be the same for another brand.

the system most likely doesnt work with the system next time buy some that connect through the audio jack and they will always work
