SMB Connection hangs

Hello,

I have several (19) systems which we are using in our office. We have implemented a centralized file server using SMB to store and access files. The challenge on Snow Leopard is that once connected, the SMV connection hangs and the only choice is to reboot the system.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

Does it hang after the systems the shares are on go offline?

I'm having issues with SMB hanging when the Windows machine hosting the shares is put to sleep or shutdown. The window that normally popups saying the connection was interrupted and asks if you would like to ignore or disconnect the shares never shows up. After this happens it is impossible to connect to any new SMB shares after the machines are online again and I am unable to eject or force umount the volumes. Terminal and Finder will stop responding. Many applications will stop responding and refuse to quit without force quit and frequently refuse to relaunch including Finder while SMB is hung. Rebooting the system will fail; it hangs at the desktop with no GUI beyond the desktop wallpaper requiring a hard reset.

It could be. Some of these machines are remote and accessing the server via VPN. I am troubleshooting an issue where the VPN drops for a period of 30-60 seconds, hence emulating the sleep scenario you are experiencing.

After this the shares cannot be ejected and I cannot reconnect to the server as you have experienced and I have to physically power the system down as you are experiencing.

I believe we share the same problem.

I've read through that page earlier and none of the problems seem to be the same unfortunately. I've never noticed this issue prior to 10.6.3 but then again I don't think I've ever put the Windows machine to sleep or shut it down before. It was acting as my router with ICS before switching to a 3.5G modem and router recently so it used to be on 24/7. Restarting the Windows machine brings up the prompt to eject or ignore the disconnection provided it is done before SMB hangs from sleep or shutdown. Sleep and shutdown never seem to trigger the prompt.

Interesting. I switched from Windows ICS to a Cradlepoint CTR500 when I first noticed it as it allowed me to finally turn off the Windows box when not in use. I just attributed it to sleep/shutdown as I never did anything but reboot the box when shares were connected in the past. I have never noticed it just stop working as the poster describes though.

Try the Terminal trick others have said speeds up their SMB. Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type the command: sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0

When it asks for a password put in your Admin password.

Also another trick is to do the command+k combination and use the command: smb://server:139 or SMB://server/share:139. The :139 will force the port 139 for the SMB session, the standard Windows sharing port.

I hope one of these tricks help your situation.

They do not unfortunately. Seems to be unrelated to all the SMB/NAS performance issues and dropping out since Snow Leopard's release. SMB functions sufficiently fast when its working. The problem seems to be that OS X does not realize the connection was interrupted and fails to show the prompt to eject or wait when the machines hosting the shares is powered down resulting in a hang that beach-balls most applications and eventually the entire interface requiring a hard reset.

This truly is one of the most fustrating issues!

Occasionally my windows machine needs to reboot for whatever reason, if I don't remember to unmount my shares from OS X 10.6.4 before I reboot the Windows machine the shares just hang.

This in turn hangs processes and eventually results in a OS X install that MUST be restarted with the use of the power button.

Dear All,
I have a similar problem with MacBook Pro at work. SMB worked fine under Leopard, then WHAMO Snow Leopard froze up my SMB connections. Computer goes into purgatory and only way to resurrect is to unplug network cable and shut down Airport. This is REALLY frustrating and I can't understand why Apple hasn't solved this. Anyone listening??! BTW, an older Intel Mac running Snow Leopard seems fine...

Well according to this Apple Discussion post by SailNC if you go into /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and changing the smb.conf file entry to security=user from security=share, sharing smb to his Linux machine, fix a problem he was having.

This might help, if you know how to change that files to see if it works for you. Of course you can always change it back to the original if it doesn't work for you.
