Why won't the data cable charge my iPad when connected to pc

For some reason when I connect my iPad to my pc with the supplied data cable it won't charge the iPad. It syncs ok but just won't charge it.
Is there a reason for this or do I need to get a different cable?
When I connect my iPhone to the pc with data cable from iPad, it charges my iPhone.
I just really need to know why it therefore won't charge my iPad.
The only way I can charge iPad up at the moment is by connecting it to the mains plug with data cable supplied

If your computer has a high-power USB port, it will charge. When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when the iPad is in sleep mode.

Cheers for that answer. I know how to put it to sleep I just thought there might have been a way to charge it whilst I was using it. I will just use my dock to charge it for now. It's just a pain that I have to keep changing it from sync to charge all the time. I thought it would have been like the iPhone but never mind.
Thanks anyway m8

a cable with 2 usb in 1 end and one usb female in the other will provide 1Amp current rather then the default .5 amp a normal usb port brig
you can get those pretty cheap
if you buy 3 of them guess it would give you 2 amps but of cause the cable would have to support that kind of watt and it would require 4 usb ports but a powered hub often have between 4 and 7 usb ports

Craig Brady - Would be nice to get answers from people without the arrogant *** attitude. Who do you think you are? The forums are for asking questions exactly like this person did. The world would be better off without jerks like you who think they are entitled to treat people any way they want just because they have an answer every once in a while. Get over yourself.

Well, he managed to outrage and offend you a lot more than he did the OP and, unlike you, he at least did provide some useful information in his post.

Seeing as how you're so new and already trying out for a Forum Police spot, let me quote a few lines from the Help pages here:

+How do I post a question?+

I think Craig was pointing out that it would have been a bit better, more proper, to run a quick search for this answer rather than opening up yet another thread on it. I also think you yourself should read the second paragraph, as it appears that you intended only to be insulting and aggressive.

Wow......missed the point entirely. I simply pointed out, rather sharply I agree, that it was entirely unnecessary for Craig to throw in the 'I'm better than you' aspect of the reply. It is really just a simple thing to do. Answer a question and go on. Why the sarcasm? What does it prove? That he knows how to be a jerk?

As for the rest of your post......new, Forum Police, quoting lines from the Help Pages........yeah......so? I am hardly interested in being involved in any part of the forum as I certainly have better things to do than to post thousands of comments. You are right, I have never posted on here before, and have never had the need to for information, as I search through posts and find the answers. But when I see some arrogant response where there is no reason for such a thing, other than to make him feel superior, it simply disgusts me.

Have a nice day!

Bravo Blues#2. I often wonder what happens to some people when wrapped in the blanket of anonymity. Rather than use the faceless forum of an online discussion group to show the best in human nature, so often people become nasty, arrogant, or just plain anti-social.

Thanks for saying something.

On another note, I consistently have a problem charging my iPads with any cable other than the short cable

supplied by Apple. I have purchased over a half dozen ten foot cables and they will charge my iPod and iPhone just fine. I have tried exchanging the cables, the chargers and the iPads. With every charger I reach the same result, I cannot find a ten foot cable that will charge my iPad. I could probably go to Apple and buy a cable from them, but they are SO expensive.

Suggestions? What, other than length, is the difference between the short cables that come with the device and the longer cables I keep getting from eBay?

Thanks much for your help.
