Adding Dot Leaders with Tabs

I am trying to make an index for church hymns. I have the title and the hymn number and want to have dots (periods) as a leader between the title and the page number. Example: Amazing Grace...........127
I know I can do this in Word but is it possible to do this in Pages 09? Thanks

Thanks for the reply, Peter. Will I also be able to sort the list, as I did in Word 2007? I have to update my index (approximately 400 pages of music so 400 plus titles) and what I would do is just list them in Word and when done I could alphabetically sort.
I really want to stay away from Microsoft and use all Apple applications. Can you think of another way to do this?

Hi Peter,

I tried following your instructions but it seems I'm missing something. Do I go ahead and type the words, e.g.

Acknowledgements ............................................................................... .......................................... 1

Then do I select the area and then follow your instructions? Or do I follow your instructions then type away (holding the period key all the way to the other end of the page?)? Both ways didn't work for me. I also tried to press the + button under Tab Stops to be able to click on Leader (it was "unpressable") and pick the type of dots I wanted, but nothing happened.

I'm not sure what to do. Hope someone can explain the steps to me in more detail for a Pages 09 Newbie!

What you have is:

Acknowledgements (tab) 1

Click in that line or lines

+Inspector > Text > Tabs > Tab Stops > select which tab the number is on (see the distance across) > Alignment > choose > Leader > choose+

You are applying the Leader style to the particular tab.

It is good practice to have a space after the words and before the number so the leader rule doesn't touch.

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for the details. I still haven't figured it out. I'm waiting for my friend (who is a Pages 09 expert but doesn't know anything about dot leaders) to return home from her vacation next week then I'll run your instructions by her and see what I may be missing.

What I did - I typed:

Acknowledgements (then i pressed tab) i

Then I left the cursor blinking just before the A

Inspector > Text > Tabs > + > Right > (then I selected ...... on the Leader pull down menu)

Nothing happened. I know it's probably something really simple I'm missing....

You do need to insert your page numbers yourself and you do not seem to have selected the particular tab in the list in the Text inspector.

Computers are stupid, and about as good as reading minds as we humans.

You need to tell it which tab you are talking about.

I assume you have a tab placed on the ruler?

With your cursor in the line/lines you wish to format:

+Menu > View > Show Ruler > click on the ruler where you want a tab > right click on the tab to change it+
