Stolen Ipad

Today may 29th 2010 My Ipad was stolen from my car,its less than 10 days old.I was at the mall where they have an apple store>I confidently walked back into the mall heading to the apple store knowing for a fact that apple will help me and the police(i filed a police report) to locate the stolen Ipad since it has a built in GPS and i have the serial number. They furiously refused and very coldly and carelessly said that they do not do that and they dont even have any database for stolen apple products and they will not track my ipad what so ever.I sware to god they did not even say sorry for my loss. Here iam walking to the apple store with all confident and hope only to face the harsh fact that really they didn't care.Eventhough they can help and they can track and they have the capability to but they wont. Worse thing is it isn't my ipad and i have to pay for new one now that i cant afford.Thank you Apple.

I can't understand why someone who took the decision to leave an expensive item like an iPad, after admitting he was being followed and was 100% sure it was with a view to being robbed, in your car where anybody could break in and get it.

Surely it would have made more sense to get in the car with your iPad and drive away from the person you suspected was going to rob you?

I don't think there's any point in blaming Apple for you making poor decisions and not taking care of your own belongings.

I'm really sorry you had your iPad stolen, that really is tough, but you made the decision to leave it in your car, unattended, even when you suspected someone had been following you, presumably this person watched you leave it in your car? If so, why leave it in there?????

If you bought a cooker, would you complain the manufacturer didn't provide pots and pans nor any food to cook on it?

You said in an earlier post you had reported it to the police. All you can do is wait to see if they turn up with anything.

It's still not clear to me how Apple is the bad guy here.

They make and sell computers & devices. They are not a security nor an insurance company, but you want them to locate your non-gps ipad and what? Get involved in the investigation?

Call the police and your credit card company. Call your insurance company.

All ipads have built in GPS. 3g has nothing to do with gps.anyways Apple is not an investigation company and you are not apple attorney to defend furiously, you cant possibly be if you dont even know that all ipads have GPS regardless of 3g or wifi..does your gps device that you use in the car have 3g!!Thank you.Take it easy on yourself I;m the one whos ipad was stolen not you so its ok boy

Only the WiFi+3G model has a GPS chip. If the one that was stolen was a WiFi only model it has no GPS chip and there is no way for anyone to trace it. The only possible way Apple would trace one of their devices (or AT&T for that matter) is as a result of a police investigation where a court order was issued.

The wifi only version has location services but +does not+ have GPS.

Yes, getting your new iPad stolen really *****, but Apple is not responsible for finding it. I agree it would be nice, but at this point in time, they don't offer that service. Deal with it and move on.

Do you expect Garmin to find your stolen Nuvi?

Fact is, only the WiFi + 3G model includes a GPS chip. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. The WiFi only models use WiFi for location purposes. That's just how it works.

I understand your frustration and anger, but coming in here and unleashing it on everyone isn't going to solve your problem. I'm also not clear on how you think it is Apple's responsibility to find and/or replace your stolen iPad. I mean, if your car was stolen, would you be going back to the dealership you bought it from, expecting THEM to find it for you?

As stated previously, the police and/or insurance company (and possibly your credit card company) are your best and only resources for recovering your iPad or receiving some sort of compensation. Good luck.

I thought I would chime in on this since my iPad was stolen on the 28th in Seattle, WA. In order to help anyone else that may have this issue in the future, here is everything that I have done/discovered since then:

1. File a police report with the serial number. Most items like this show up on Craigslist or in a pawn shop. Legitimate pawn shops are required to document the serial number when purchasing items like this so that the police can track them. Yes, I laughed at how honest I think pawn shops are too.

2. File with your insurance company (if you have renters/property insurance). Most of them consider the iPad a computer and is covered as such under your policy.

3. Apple will take your police case number and attempt to locate through their means. Or at least they say they will. Since they won't contact you or provide follow-up information there really isn't any way to know for sure.

4. Mobile Me is $99/yr and is far outweighed by the amount of time you will worry about data on your device being stolen. You can send the thief a message, remotely lock, or even wipe if they ever connect it to a network before wiping it themselves. You have to initialize mobile me before it's stolen though; unfortunately I was waiting for it to be free.

5. Lock the device with a passcode. You can also set it to wipe after 10 consecutive bad attempts.

6. Not all of us have the luxury of going home to put our iPads in a safe haven; I happened to be traveling at the time and the car WAS my safe haven. It's not realistic to carry my giant iPhone with me wherever I go and the issue here isn't that it was HIS fault for not protecting it. The issue is that there are those without morals or common decency that take advantage of the system whenever they can. I for one will be happy when I can use that same system to have them punished by the full extent of the law.

haha you gotta laugh to be honest i don't think anyone here with a sense of knowledge would dare take there iPad out and about within the 10days they had it and i doubt they would leave it un-attended in a car rapped up its just easy. i personally don't think anyone was following you, to be honest i think that it was lucky grab maybe you had a nice car they thought it would have valubles in or maybe you have a crap car with no alarm (easy target). Maybe you'll think twice about doing this again. police will probably trace it up. MobileMe is great feature you could have sent the theif a message saying return my item and if they don't you could have restored it so it would be useless to him unless he manages to have an imac or macbook so he can set it up him self. Ino that if you report your iphone stolen it can be picked up with IMEI number and blocked but doubt this works for iPad...

Actually neither model of the ipad nor iphone has a GPS reciever. That is per Apple technical support. I called them today to discuss the differences between the Ipad 3g and wifi models. I argued with the tech that I had read that the 3g had GPS he says no the only difference is the 3G radio. He then told me that my iPhone 3g does not have GPS either. He stated that the wifi model trianglates between wifi hotspots for location services and that the iphone and the 3g triangalate between cell towers. So I guess if you don't have 3g activated then you loose the accuracy of cell tower triangulation.

To confirm, I had a friend call apple support to ask the same question a few hours later. Same answer.

umm, do you HAVE an iPhone or iPad? the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G[S] both have GPS (the original iPhone doesn't) and the iPad Wi-Fi + 3G has GPS as well... and to the person who said no one would take their iPad out that soon after buying it missed the point of having an iPad...i took mine out the day i bought it...it has only left my side a handful of times when i left it at home...
