You are responsible for your property,
That's all there is really, if you don't want your next one stolen don't leave it where it can be stolen.
I sympathize, but totally disagree with your stance on this

Yes, but I'd like to hear form a lawyer on this one.

Sorry to hear about your iPad being stolen. I'm not sure, but I think Apple doesn't help in these matters for liability reasons. You're best off reporting the stolen iPad to police and reporting it stolen on a free site like http://www.stolen-property.com/
You might also want to check with your car insurance company. Maybe you're covered under the policy. Doubt it, but worth a call.

I highly doubt reporting his iPad being stolen 13 months after it happened will do any good.
Apple doesn't know WHO is using your pad but they do know where any of their devices equipped with 3G are.
What people are saying is that if they're tracking them for other reasons why won't they track them for us when they've been stolen.

No they don't.
I'm not impressed with the claim that Apple doesn't do anything for us customers when our devices are stolen due to privacy concerns. For one thing, if I expliclity allow my device to be tracked, I'm openly inviting this intrusion into my privacy. Furthermore, the devices don't even have to be tracked. My iPad had to be plugged into my iTunes account in order to use it. Likewise, all of my iPhones had to be activated before they could be used.
I'm hard pressed to understand this glaring privacy issue when it's a simple solution to enable the blacklisting of EMEI's and MAC addresses via iTunes. Even better would be the ability for the custmer to do this via iTunes. Apple doesn't even need to be involved other than maintaining the database. It can't be that difficult because Barnes and Noble does this for their Nooks, which sell for less than $200 dollars. A stolen Nook can run unauthorized software but once it's flagged in the system one has to prove ownership before getting any kind of customer service or ability to use the standard Nook software.
Apple's failure to address this adequately is inexcusable, but I'm not sure what the solution is. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by not enjoying any more of Apple's products simply because a thief stole my iPad a couple months ago, but at the same time I don't want to give Apple a pass on soemething so easily addressed.
I agree iwth Braunmf. I know who stole my ipad and still cannot get any help from the police or apple. Apple tells me they do not keep track of mac addresses, i find this to be crap. I have the serial # for my device, how hard is it for them to look in their database and match it to the mac address? I will be contacting my isp to get the mac address from them or motorola to get it off of my router. Once that is done, I am going to ask the police to check with the suspects isp and see if the mac address hit their home network. If so, then they should be caught. Good luck to everyone who no longer has their property! apple should send a thank you note to my homeowners insurance for buying a product that shouldnt have to be replaced.

If the police will not take action, file a civil lawsuit (sue him).

Let us know how that works for you.
so there IS a way to locate your ipad that was stolen if it's wi-fi 3g?
If you registered it with FindMyiPad before it was stolen, maybe.
