How to eliminate unwanted menu bar icons?

When I installed all the software for my new Canon MP640 printer-copier-scanner it put a "Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector" icon in the menu bar. It doesn't seem to do much - and I really don't want another nanometer of space taken-up by unwanted menubar icons... Does anyone know how to remove this?

Thanks!

OK the cmd-drag didn't work - I had tried that but appreciate the suggestion!

As to your suggestion: In Accounts I find a Login program called *Canon IJ Network Scanner* (checked to be hidden) - and it is in /Library/Printers/Canon/IJScanner/Utilities/Canon IJNetwork Scanner Selection. OK but if I remove this from the login - will it remove just the menu bar icon or will I then lose the ability to use my MP640 as a scanner?

When I open the program by double-clicking it, I get the same screen as when I choose it from the menu bar. I just don't want this menubar "icon" taking up real estate --

The HELP says this: (The icon itself does not show in this paste so I just put in underlines __- it is the image of a printer with the top opened and an arrow indicating a scan direction or something.

About Menu
Click __in the menu bar to display the menu.

Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner
You can select or deselect this option. Select this option to receive images from the scanners selected in the settings screen. Deselect this option to not to receive images from the scanners.
Note
When Scan the images using the operation panel of the scanner is not selected, the icon appears gray ( __ ).

You would not lose the ability, the application will still be there, Except that when you want to use it you will have to go to lib/printer/canon/ij etc and boot the utility from there. But I think once you do that the icon might come back.

Some installers usually have the option to check or uncheck if you want the icon in the menubar or the prefrences have an option to show or not show the icon. Maybe that is worth looking into.

I appreciate your reply and the other as well! I'll try this- but are you saying that I may have to re-install this (in order to see if the choice of the menubar icon appearing or not is given)?? I would have to re-insert the installation DVD and run through the procedure? (But this MP640 is already setup for printing and such-- WiFi and network - I'd hate to cause any problems with that!-- )

Any recommendations appreciated and I should likely contact CANON too- but no service is as good as APPLE DISCUSSIONS-- really appreciate this!

Removing that item from the login items would not mean you'd have to reinstall later. You could always run that app manually or add it back to login items.

Whether or not this app is responsible for scanning, or just for the menu, I don't know. I would suspect both, but can't be sure. If you don't scan often, you could remove it from login items and just run that app manually when you need to scan. If you do scan often, and the same program is responsible for both the menu bar icon and the scanning function, you'll just have to live with the icon.

I had the same icon on my PowerBook G4-12" and I removed it from login items then the icon was gone; I could still scan; I put it back - the icon was back - seems you've solved this for me - I shall indicated that ASAP and then leave up for a day until I now verify on my MAIN MAC- this MBP-13".

Many thanks!!!!!!! I have 18 menubar icons plus ASM and Spotlight- now I can reduce by one!!
