Midi foot controller suggestions?

So I was contemplating purchasing guitar rig 4 with the foot controller but then it dawned on me - if MainStage is good enough for Trent Reznor & NIN to use live, then I'm sure it's good enough for a useless "musician" that never finished anything he starts...

...so here is my question; what do people recommend as a good foot midi controller to swap between guitar sounds in a live environment. So far I've learned about the Behringer FCB1010 & I have to say it looks like it will do just fine, & the price is good too.

Can anyone confirm or suggest something else/better?

Thanx

Hi,

I've been using the FCB1010 with Mainstage, Guitar Rig 3 & 4, and all the Amplitube guitar products for quite a while now and it it works very well. I have had no problems doing what I need to do e.g. patch navigation, stomp control, expression pedal (wah, etc), volume control, cue backing tracks, etc, etc. If it stopped working, I'd just replace it with another one since it's inexpensive.

I would strongly suggest getting iFCB which is a Mac editor for the FCB1010...costs only 20 bucks and is a real lifesaver when it comes to programming the FCB - programming that puppy manually is a severe hassle and a time-waster.

You also don't need the Uno chip - in fact, the stock factory chip in the FCB works better with Mainstage. I had the Uno chip installed and then took it out to use the FCB stock with MS.

Hope that helps...

Oh ok, cool..thanks for fav'ing the vids! Sure, feel free to msg me on Youtube. GR4 is a bit easier to MIDI control in Mainstage than GR3 IMHO.

The other really cool foot controller option is the one that Keith McMillen has recently designed, it's called the Softstep, and will be coming out very soon.

It's a brand new design, is made from carbon fibre so it's very thin, light, and portable...but the really exciting thing is that instead of the foot switches being just binary (for lack of a better description) they will do way more than switch on and off. The switches have sensors in them so you can roll your foot on an X and Y axis and have that movement send MIDI messages! So each foot switch is kinda like an expression pedal. I think the creative possibilities for this are immense.

The price is fairly reasonable as well, I don't think it's posted yet (as far as I know) but I heard it will be around $250.

Anytime DDD...yeah, good point - it's probably difficult to control to a certain degree of precision with your feet. Personally, I'd probably use it for various sweeps or to express through a defined range of values. It looks like the editor provides for a good deal of flexibility so I would expect you could define hi-lo ranges, etc.

You're right - will only know for sure when tried out, looking forward to giving it a go and will post an update if I get my hands on one!

I just had an opportunity to try out a Line 6 FBV Express Mk II pedal. The Mk II has USB out and while it is designed to primarily be used with Line 6 amps and effects, they have a free software programmer for it that allows it to be setup and used with any other software.

After setting it up with the MIDI CC numbers I wanted I tested it with MainStage 2.1.1 and it works like a charm.

It has a volume/control pedal and 4 footswitches. The switches can be setup to either toggle on and off or work as momentary switches. They each have an indicator LED to show on/off status.

It is quite a bit smaller and lighter than most other pedals and for someone who only needs one control pedal and four switches it is ideal. Plus it is powered by USB. Street price is about $100 USD.

The Line 6 Shortboard Mk II has similar capabilities but more footswitches.
