One of the reasons my wife bought an iPad was to keep a copy of her art website on it. There does not appear to be any way to copy the website files from our iMac onto the iPad. We thought that we could just access the files directly as we do on the iMac and not need any internet access. I have seen some apps that enable you to download individual pages (instapaper and offline pages) but these are not appropriate for getting a full website, especially one that needs all images of her paintings.
Is there any way we can get the website files onto the iPad so that we can just browse them in Safari when the iPad does not have any internet access?
There are some 3rd party app PDF readers such as GoodReader which includes options for other file types.
With the website selected with Safari on your Mac, at the Safari menu bar go to File and select Print. Select the PDF tab or button and at the menu window that appears, select Save as PDF.
Don't have my Ipad as of yet, so I have no experience.
Don't know how many pages she would need to use, but does Ipad Safari support "save as web archive"?
One would have to save each page.
Not ideal, but might work.
Going to look at alternatives in a couple of days, when mine arrives.
Good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion but WebCapture is a snapshot of a single page so no good for for accessing a full website offline. Also, the suggestion for printing as pdf also only gives a single page.
Take a look at the dropbox app.
It's free and just might be the ticket. Certainly worth a try.
You can install in on multiple computers and there is a an Ipad app.
You can place you site folder in dropbox and it will sync with the Ipad.
I believe you should be able to access the index or home file and load it offline
into Safari.
Again I don't have my Ipad as of yet, but it appear to work ok syncing with another computer.
It appears to work on my Ipod, but the browser has it's limitations.
If it's an Iweb site it would need to be published to a folder.
Anyway, the free space available with a dropbox should be more than enough for your needs.
GoodReader (99 cents) lets you transfer a zip archive of a website to the iPad, then you can tell it to unzip the archive into a folder which you can then browse within the app. I'm using it to read one of my favorite websites offline. It's also a pretty full-featured viewer for PDF files (which I bought it for), so it's worth it for that too.
With a Mobile me account, all bookmarks are synchronized between the iMac and the iPad. You could sign up for a trial mobile me account and sync the bookmarks. 🙂
GoodReader is the one 🙂 Splashed out my 59p and copied the folder with the website files via wifi. Now browsing offline with the full website, fantastic. Only complaint is that Apple do not let you sync folders via iTunes and so it is either a folder copy via wifi or a zip and extraction.
I'm trying goodreader but for some reason it's not loading my images properly?
do i have to ZIP the entire folders and then use goodreader? i've tried only copying 1 file at a time and creating an 'image' folder with the app and copying images into that folder...
