Odd. I've just tried it on my iPad, and after I get through the initial screen (name and email address), I get a second screen that has IMAP and POP tabs. That screen is the one where I set up servers and so on
I use a common mail-provider (GMX), that is often used as free mail service. But: as free mail Service they do not provide IMAP. I do pay them so I can use IMAP. For convenience for other people, when I put in my mail address mickey.mouse@gmx.de (of course not my real one), the iPad automatically switches to POP, as most people would use, and the configuration is done automatically.
As workaround, I could type in a different adress, fill in the proper configurations and change back to my real adress. Et voilà IMAP works... but who would think about that??
sorry to caps that but I have literally been on the phone with my service provider for a day trying to get this dam ipad to function properly with imap. We've tried every setting combo possible and I've been sending hundreds of "test" emails from ipad to laptop to iphone to ipod touch and vice versa. I almost cried/threw myself out a window several times.
I almost gave up and just POP'd
then i found your post!
I set it up. Easy as pie.
It works!
Even called my serv provider to tell him b/c he was totally obsessing about it too. he must have called me four times with possible fixes that didn't work.
