'Unmounting FireVault' at the 24hr mark

Last night I turned on FileVault on my MacBook. for the conversion i reduced my home directory to around 30GB (I've got a lot of free space on my hard drive - something like 70GB free). It took about 60 minutes to encrypt my home dir, but then the progress bar switched to the 'striped' one and it says, "Unmounting FireVault"...

I know 'unmounting FireVault' (aka securely deleting the unencrypted home dir) takes some time but I turned it on around noon yesterday. Its been roughly 24hrs and it still isnt done.... I don't want to click the 'Cancel' button or do anything to it since it might mess the computer up.. but, how much longer should I be waiting here?

Is there anything I can do?

Macbook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.3)
