Unlike laptops/desktop computers, the iPad is a closed system and works like the iPhone/iPod. OS updates are provided via iTunes, and none have been announced yet besides iPhone OS 4 sometime in the fall. Apps can only be obtained via the app store.

None of Apple's mobile devices are expected to ever support either Java or Flash.

Are you sure you need Java (and not Javascript)? What kind of email system is it?

Javascript is a scripting language used for websites and web apps. Java is a full programming language that uses a binary of some form to do stuff. Very few websites use java, however stuff like corporate web apps and other sorts of web applications use java because it is powerful and is cross-platform.

I had thought the iOS3 software supported java, but I guess not.
