Do you mean the default pdf viewer within Safari, or the default pdf viewer for files on your hard drive?

Visit this site http://www.schubert-it.com/download/ and download PDF Browser Plugin 2.2.3. Install the plug-in into /Library/Internet Plug-ins. This will allow you to view pdf files with safari.

Is there any reason why this additional plug-in is needed on top of the Adobe plug-in?

(I had the same problem and this fixed it, although adding another plugin isn't what I consider to be a fix)

I honestly have no idea, I read about the solution about a year ago on these forums because I had the same problem. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this.

There's always something about this that confuses me. I thought I understood but now I can't quite get it straight in my mind.

I've got the PDF Browser plug-in in /Library/Internet Plug-ins. I've also got the AdobePDFViewer plug-in in the same location. Safari displays PDFs using the Adobe Viewer and my other browsers display PDFs using the PDF Browser plug-in (Schubert). It all works fine, but I can't remember why it works this way.
