iPad wakes on bluetooth keyboard activity

This is something that I am finding bothersome, though I don't blame Apple for missing it on launch. I would like to see it fixed eventually.

Since I use the bluetooth keyboard often with my iPad, I carry the two together. Usually I just leave the keyboard on, tap the power button on the iPad and throw both in my bag. However, if you tap a key on the keyboard, the iPad comes back to life, until it does a timeout auto power-off. This is bad, as the keys of the keyboard can be continuously pressed as you walk around, and your iPad doesn't ever go into sleep mode, draining your battery.

We need an option in Settings...Keyboard that the iPad does not wake on bluetooth keyboard activity. There is something like in the bluetooth settings of Snow Leopard, which is nice for laptops but will become crucial for the iPad.

I can't believe how awful this is.

It's bad enough that any keypress wakes the sleeping iPad. And it's made way worse than it has to be by the fact that in their infinite wisdom, Apple decided that an "off" switch was an unnecessary complication for a wireless keyboard.

But what's really #!!@ intolerable is the fact that the iPad won't subsequently go back to sleep. It will happily stay open to the logon page overnight, draining 20% of my battery while it sits in a closed backpack. I mean, really? Someone thought that was a good idea?

I understand the hassles that go with being an early adopter, and there are all sorts of rough edges that I'm willing to shrug my shoulders and say "well, it's v1", but this is just... words fail me.

I had this happen to me while I was traveling recently to my daughter's graduation. I had turned off the keyboard and put both of them in my bag. However, when I finally arrived at my destination I found that iPad had been running for the whoile trip and was displaying a message saying it had to be hooked up to iTunes. The short story here is that the iPad locked up because it was expecting my passcode and all it was getting was random keys from the keyboard that somehow woke up. I was completely locked out! I ended up haveing to go to a local Apple store where all they could do was restore it to its original, off the shelf state. Luckily I had backed up before I had left and I wasn't planning on doing any real work on this trip. Moral of the story for me, either turn off the BT or turn off the iPad if your traveling with both in your bag, particularly if you use a passcode for your iPad.

Hold down the power button on the side of the Bluetooth keyboard and it will turn off. The iPad will show the Bluetooth connection is gone. From then on touching any keys will no longer wake up the iPad and the iPad won't be able to connect to the keyboard until you press the power button again.

This was important to me for the simple scenario of having the bluetooth keyboard sitting across the room and my on the couch and trying to type - but the onscreen keyboard not showing up because it was connected to the keyboard on the other side of the room.

So ... for me the power button on the side of the Apple Wireless Keyboard works to solve this problem.

Hopefully this is posted with "tongue in cheek".

The obvious solution is turn turn either the iPad off (hold the wake/sleep button for a few seconds) or turn the keyboard off (there is an on/off switch on the keyboard - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2830).

For me, it doesn't. Granted, if you turn off the keyboard, the iPad will stop getting the signal and not wake.

However, if the keyboard is in the bag with the iPad (a likely scenario), it can get turned on by the same jostling that presses the keys. There have been times when I was sure the keyboard was powered off, but both were on when I arrived at my destination.

Also, the standard operating mode for the keyboard is "always on", since its battery lasts much longer than the iPad (i.e. months). Perhaps this is why Apple made turning the keyboard off such a chore, requiring a long press of the button before it's finally off.

The better solution is for the iPad to behave the same way as the laptop, and give the user the option to ignore the keyboard for a wake signal.
