WD 750GB Passport Drive ERRORS!

I am new to mac and reading as much as I can but I need to get my files moved off my old Windows NTFS drives.
I picked up a 750GB WD Passport drive and I'm getting 2 errors.
First I used Utilities and setup 2 partitions both as MAC OS Extended (journaled)

Here are the 2 errors I'm getting:

It's unfortunate really. Western Digital actually makes some good drives, but for some reason, they can't get a grip on making good controllers for their external enclosures (or get a good vendor to do it for them). Their whole line of external drives... be they the Passports, the MyBooks (ugg!), etc... just seem to be plagued with problems. It's not a one-time issue either. It's been going on for years.

LaCie, Toshiba, and Seagate are all good external options.

On another note I have 2 Seagate 1TB drives in eSATA/USB external bays I used with my windows machine.
What a chore very slow to load, very slow speed can even watch an avi file without it skipping.
I'm about to go back to PC I can not rely on a single drive in my mac I need more space!
