No battery percentage on iPhone 3g

My mother-in-law just purchased an iPhone 3G. However I noticed there is no battery percentage showing in the battery icon. I don't see a reason why there isn't one showing. I want to add one for her without jail braking the phone. Is there a good reason battery percentage is shown with the 3GS and not the 3G version?
