No battery percentage on iPhone 3g

My mother-in-law just purchased an iPhone 3G. However I noticed there is no battery percentage showing in the battery icon. I don't see a reason why there isn't one showing. I want to add one for her without jail braking the phone. Is there a good reason battery percentage is shown with the 3GS and not the 3G version?

Powerbook G4 17" 1Ghz, 1Gig Ram, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

There are some things that are 3GS only and this is one of them. There have to be some features that only the 3GS has so that people will want to buy it. There is no official way to get the % to show on the 3G.

there are many application on app.store if you want
but only every 5% for the changes...
