I have a number of older DVDs created via Roxio that I have made .dmg copies using Disk Utility. When I mount and try to play some of them, I get the message: "There was a problem opening the media. The media type is not supported". One .dmg image does play. All of the DVDs I copied play fine in DVD player.
Any suggestions?

My guess is they won't play as a mounted dmg because that is just a hard disk, not a DVD. You would likely have to burn the image to a disk. However, I think [VLC media player|http://www.videolan.org/vlc> can play the DVD formatted files vs needing to see a DVD.
If you are wondering why the DVD player can't play them, I would imagine it has to do with digital rights management and the Motion Picture Association of America controlling the playback.
Sorry to say "thank you" so late. (My son just got married)
I can't imagine there are any digital rights involved b/c these are all self-created DVDs.
Is there another program like VLC? When I tried to open one .iso file created some yrs ago using Roxio, it crashed. In addition, when I open .img files created with iDVD, the introduction will not play; VLC goes directly to Menu. Some of the .dmg images made from older disks created using Roxio and iDVD play fine, but some will not allow me to open the chapters on the original DVD.
Again, thank you for answering.
