Loss Of Carrier

I've been using the iPhone 3G for about two years now. My only real complaint is that I live in a large city and get around on the subway. Every time I use the subway and come back to street level, I have to reboot the phone to re-establish the connection to my carrier. Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?

Thanks

A quicker method is to put the phone in airplane mode for a few seconds and then turn airplane mode off.
